a64 3000 venice build questions - idle temps?

Hi all,

Just put my new system together and after a brief hiccup (the psu was doa!) everything is up and running. My cpu temp is around 40 degrees idle at the moment - thats with a few case fans turned off and the psu mounted outside of the case (the side panel is also off). I have an arctic 64 freezer mounted on the cpu and i used the standard paste that came with it (mx something). My question is - is this the sort of temperature I should expect? It is very humid at the moment so perhaps its that - but I got the impression that the a64 runs extremely cool (28-35 degrees idle). I've set the cpu voltage to 1.425v (it was 1.5 by default for some reason) and the temp is still the same though i think the standard voltage for the venice is a bit lower, 1.4v. Its the e6 bw revision so it might even be lower than that. Can anyone shed some light on the cpu temp and tell me the default voltage for a venice 3000 revision e6? I only ask about the cpu temperature as I want to overclock the processor to at least 2.2ghz.

on hot days my A64 newcastle and go through the roof. On cold days its like 28 all the time and perhaps in the early 30's for gaming.

39 is fine for any CPU - winters coming soon and then temps will be super low. The AC64 cooler is pretty damn good in my opinion and theres not much else you can really do to keep the temps down when it gets so hot and stuffy in your office/house.

Its rather typical - been putting together the new system and testing it today - earlier I found I had a doa hiper type-r psu and having just run memtest on the geil modules ive bought I've found that one of them has errors all over it :S.

My overclocked winchester is set to 1.425v just like yours, and it sits at about 42c at idle, and 52c at load. This is with the stock heatsink. I would have expected slightly better temps with your arctic freezer though.


What temps do you get at load? It could just be the warm weather, or your motherboard is reading the temperature wrong.

I set my Venice E3 to 1.02V and it idle at 41'C. Its on the stock heatsink with its fan off. Max out at around 49'C at load (still passive).

Could always overclock it but most of the time I don't need that speed.

I too have a AMD 3000 E6 BW revison but with a Thermaltake Silent Tower. I currently have 2 intake fans (front and side) and 3 exhaust fans (2 at the back and a blowhole) as well as a 12cm psu fan. Not sure of case temps because MBM doesn't recognise my motherboard, but using CBId i can see that it idles at 34/35 C. This is whilst at 2.43GHz. The highest temp that i have seen so far is 38 C after a few hours of Need for Speed Underground 2. I also have a temperature probe attached to the base of my cpu cooler that reads 29.5 C load. Your should be ok.

It seems that my motherboard is slightly overvolting my cpu, because according to the AMD site it's supposed to 1.35v-1.45v . It's currently running at 1.424v +/- a few mV.



You can go to this xtremesystems thread and download the program that tells you your cpu's max temperature, mine is 55 C.

Venice E6 run at 1.4v.

Temps stock should be very low - 26°C - 35°C

well with the thermal paste I used a rice grain sized blob in the middle of the heatsink - should I use a different thermal paste or apply it differently?

For the thermal paste i used Arctic Silver 5.

-At first i put a rice grain size blob on the cpu and added the cooler.
-I then removed it too see if the blob had spread out accross the whole of the cpu ihs (the silver cover), it hadn't so i applied more in the areas not covered by the paste.
-I then applied the cooler again twisted it a little.
-I removed the heatsink one last time to make sure that there was a thin layer covering the whole of the cpu before finally re-attaching the cooler.

If the paste doesn't cover that whole of the cpu ihs then the heat transfer isn't going to be as good, leading to higher temps.
