    Talking New laptop...

Oh...the benfits of having a family member work for an electrical retailer (My dad works for Siemens)

I will be getting this laptop delivered on 1st November or just after:

    Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 1840 Laptop

Intel Pentium 4 3.0GhZ with 'HT' technology
    1024MB DDR SDRAM
    80GB
    Integrated DVD+RW
    ATI Radeon 9600 128MB
    15.4" Screen @ 1280x800
    2 Hours battery life

    Also includes:
XP Home, Word 2002, Works 7 + the other standard kind of apps.

To the lovely sum of £1000!!!! Now, even i can see this is a seriously good deal. Two quick questions tho - Is HT Technology useful? And also, are/is this laptop going to be good for gaming on??

Aye, that is the downside - but wherever i go i have a power point to plug it into so its not really a problem 2 Hours mobile would be more than plenty for me.

That is a damn fine deal, Certainly a good laptop for games. Like David said battery life is a little short, will be shorter when playing games.

If they quoted 2 hours on the spec sheet then the battery will be much shorter than that when doing anything taxing.

Mine powerbook has a quoted time of 5 hours, and can manage about 4 when doing basic mp3s or text, and will drop to about 2hours when playing games

I'm pretty much the same as Headbrace.

My 15" Powerbook can go anywhere between 2hrs and 4.5hrs of constant use depending on what it's doing etc.

Power supply will not be a problem as it will either be plugged into a power socket round a friends house, at UNI or at my house Thanks for the forewarning tho!

It includes a wireless port 802.11b adaptor. Does this mean if i get a wirelss connector for my base PC i will be able to surf the internet and play games from a different room wireless??

You do not know how much i would like to get like 20 of these stocked in! (serious profit!!) Thing is its a company scheme where its one pc to one employee only. This is due to government Tax laws! Your best bet would be to go for a career with Siemens

Yes its possible and pretty easy, just get a pci card for ur desktop. Then set up the cards in ADHOC mode (thats what i've been told anyway). Shouldn't be a problem, im goin to try a similar thing with my grandad's laptop sometime next week.

    Nice laptop ...

I wanna get me a laptop but can't afford it and don't wanna go 2nd hand as by the time you've got to an average spec (600Mhz+) you might as well spend like another 100 quid and get a 1.2Ghz Celeron Laptop!

Nice laptop although i'd reccomend getting a 2nd battery unit to go in the place of the CD Drive or Floppy Drive.

What's the point in having a PORTABLE computer if you can't use it without plugging it into the wall?

    Ben
Its more of a desktop replacement for me. I don't want to worry about the specs not being up to standard in a couple of years time (i.e being able to run most apps perfect still.) As i have stated, wherever i go there is a wall plug for me to use. I will not be needing it on the train or on flights so their is no worries for me!

Is it possible tho to buy another battery just in incase i ever found myself in a situation where i needed one??

Yes, most manufacturer's sell additional batteries, although budget around a 100notes for it.

Some are less, but thats a fair guess.

sounds like a nice lappy dude. The only downside might be the lack of ability to update your GFX drivers. I am gaming on a laptop and becuase the screens drivers are built into the gfx card drivers, ATI dont do the updates, the lappy makers do, the people that made my lappy havnt updated ever but you may be lucky.... you might be on a roll!
