    Dvd-rw

Im just building a budget pc for uni (see other thread) and was planing on sticking a std singlelayer DVD burner in it, for backups etc.
    - But looking on scan etc, theres only two slimline ones!, there all duallayer and under £30!

So now i need to figure out what drive to get.
    - Its going to be my only drive, and as it will be my only DVD-player to, it would be good if its quietish when playing DVDs.

Just wondering if anyones got any thoughts?

I've had a Philips DVD+R drive and a Pioneer 108 which is dual layer +/- and I would not hesitate to recommend the Pioneer drives - I have 100% success rates with every disk, both cdr and dvd, including dvd+rws that wouldn't burn any more in the Philips drive.

However, ask yourself if it's worth dual layer - you probably won't find many single layer burners now, and the difference in price will be marginal. Dual layer disks are still quite expensive too - I bought a couple for about £3.50 at the start of the year, and I've still not used them.

Toshiba SD-R5372VBB would be my reccomendation at £31.31.

It is one of the quieckest drives at burning DVD and CD's, is very reliable and has gained many best buys over the past few months. At £31.31 its a bargain and fit's there or there abouts in your budget.

Here is a review here BTW; http://www.custompc.co.uk/ unfortunately no direct link, but look under archived reviews, then CD / DVD Drives and the Toshiba should be the second review on the list (Toshiba R5372BK).

This drive gets my vote, so much so I have two lol

You should go for the NEC ND3520A DVD-RW. You can barely hear it, when it is working!!!

Well, i read the reviews, and then checked the specs of the ones on scan.
    - I seams that although the ones reveiwed one was much slower at CD-RW's the later ones are both exactly the same rated speed.

The only real diffence seems to be the Nec is a bit cheaper, and avalable in Black, Silver and 'Ivory' (beige)

    NEC ND-3540A - £28.96
    Toshiba SD-R5372VBB - £31.31

Another vote for the NEC 3540A here. It has had better reviews than the Toshiba too (which has media compatablity issues).

Both are great drives, don't think you can go wrong with either.

P.S wasn't aware of media compatobility issues with the Toshiba, haven't come accross anything yet. Hope I don't either

I've got the Nec 3540a and it's great. Playing back some burnt dvd's or other stuff makes it spin up to full speed and then it is annoyingly loud but all you need to do is use Nero Drivespeed and set it to silent (read at 1x).

Yeah, well at home (here) i have three drives.
    - DVD-RW (single layer)
    - CD-RW
    - Old DVD-Rom

The DVD-rom is set to 1x read, and used solely for watching DVDs.
    - Although with a SFF, i only have one opticaldrive space, so we'll see. (its just bit of pain adjusting drive speed all the time!)
