    new rig suggestions

    hi guys,

this is my first post on Hexus, nice to be here

Very soon I will be building a new rig, and will be buying some new main components. use is mainly for gaming, but some work too I guess!

Anyway, here is what Im thinking of,

    AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+
    BFG 7800GTX OC 256MB
DFI LAN PARTY NF 4 SLI-D
    2 x 74GB WD RAPTORS (in raid)

That setup is my absolute max budget!

Any suggestions to due with Cpu? Graphics? Or shall I go ahead and buy buy buy!!

    Cheers

depending on storage requirements you might be better off swapping the 2 raptors for a samsung p120s 250gb sata2 drive. Great value for money lots of space and just as quick as the raptor in some tests e.g. faster at far cry level loading.

with the price difference you could still afford one raptor aswell.

p.s. the raptors are loud and the samsung is very quiet.

other than that its a great selection of components

I would just stick with a 7800GT and leave the cash for a new case or 2GB of ram.. Unless you have a 21".. all that power would just go to waste...
    Me want Ultrabook

well I have a 200gb Maxtor Diamondmax 10, aswell to go with this for storing Music, Movies etc, the raptors will be used for OS and games.

In a few months I will buy some Crucial Ballistix PC4000 2GB. When I have some more money!

A 20" tft is a possibility maybe at xmas.

no problems i hate loud components too. my new antec p180 case is lovely and quiet. I can highly recommend it for your new rig FEAR. Although the door is a little on the flimsy side.

I'd switch the 7800GTX for a GT (around £240 now), ditch the Raptors for a single large capacity 16MB Cache drive or just get a single 26GB Raptor and use that for the OS.

Money saved to be used towards 2GB RAM or a lovely case.

i got both the raptors for £150, so dont think I will be ditching them. Wont come across a bargain like that again.

    I have a nice case

    7800gtx ruleeeeeeeeeeeee!

Wow that is really good bargain on the raptors 150 quid! Arent they a bit noisy though at 10k rpm?
Yeah and like everyone else says i would also downgrade the 7800gtx to a 7800 gt.

I would also agree on getting the gt over the gtx if you are building within a month. Otherwise wait for the new ATI parts. Spend the money saved on an X-Fi card if you can't think of a better use for it

X-Fi cards are for professional audio nuts: unless you can afford the mental £250+ version with the onboard memory: which helps in games. An ordinary person won't notice the difference from an Audigy II ZS.

The Raptors are excellent: though in RAID 0 you're best to make sure you backup well and often.

As for the GTX vs the GT:

They are both great cards and if you have the money get the 7800GTX as its a great card and has that little bit more umph than the GT. Trust me - you won't regret it. It'll also have more go in the future when games are gonne get seriously challenging: UT2K7 and suchlike

Storage may be an issue if you download a lot but another SATA drive will sort that out

And I would say 2gb RAM should maybe replace you 1gb OCZ at some point mate

yep, I have the money for a 7800gtx, so going for that, and i know I wont regret it. I was going to get a 7800gt, but I have come into a bit of money, and couldnt resist!

and I will get some 2gb RAM next month, crucial ballistix pc4000 2 X 1GB

after that I will buy a 3rd hard disk for storage.

or just use dvd rw to back up important files.
