    Performance of TFT vs CRT

    Hi,

Can an 8ms (I think that's right) TFT screen refresh as effectively as a 100Hz+ CRT screen?

I've always used CRT, but the usual size/weight issues have always been an issue. I'm wondering if I would notice any "drop" in performance by moving to one of the new, fast TFT screens. The 19" Iiyama PLE481 looks appealing, and the price is only a little more than the Iiyama 19" VMPro 454.

Also, I'd be looking (funds permitting) to drive this with a 7800 Graphics card, if that makes a difference?

    Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

    Thanks

I have a IIyama TFT and its very nice for games, has a 12ms responce time, no ghosting or anything what so ever. even on very fast paced FPS games

the colours are great and i think its super compared to my bulky 17" crt which took up half the room. Also easy to move around.

IIyama are a nice make. Im hoping to get a 20" tft soon so I get the best out of my system for games

Unless you're using your system for some serious design work, any decent modern TFT will probably perfrom as well as you can notice. I believe CRTs still have a better colour respose, hence my comment on design work, but for your usual home usage I can't see you having an issue with a TFT.
One thing to remember though is TFTs have a 'native' resolution, which can be too small for some eyes. I see people in work all the time running their TFTs at a lower resolution than native, which is just a waste of resources.

Thanks for the answers - resolution shouldn't be a problem as I like to run my 19" CRT @ 1280x1024 anyway, so kinda used to it!

A lot of my time is spend processing pictures from my digital camera, so slightly unsure of the colour response. I may pop down to PCWorld (or some other over-priced retail outlet) to check them out in real life for colour.

As long as the monitor can be configured/tuned for Adobe-RGB I should be happy...

    - Should be easier to read than a 19" CRT then as it is 19" viewable as opposed to 18" on a 19" CRT Monitor.

short answer - not really, no.

take a peek at the display reviews on tomshardware...
    http://graphics.tomshardware.com/dis...wsonic-05.html
When a manufacturer states that their monitor has "an 8ms response time" this will usually be the fastest possible transition that they could force the monitor under full contrast and brightness etc... most of the pixel transition times tend to be quite a bit slower than this quoted value unfortunately (some "pro" graphics displays, usually those for photo-editing, quote realistic response times, or the slowest)

When you consider than 80% of your colour transitions on an "8ms" panel are actually taking 20-25ms you realise it's not quite the same as a crt at 100Hz

IF all the transitions took 8ms then the theoretical maximum refresh rate without ghosting would be 1/0.008, or 125 Hz. The best panel across the board that I have seen reviewed anywhere so far is the viewsonic vp191b which kept all transitions under 16ms which means absolutely no ghosting at a 60Hz refresh.

That said some people don't notice ghosting as much. Suffice to say TFT are way better (and cheaper) than they used to be, but their performance especially in response times has some way to go yet. They do look nice though, and I do want one

p.s. to convert the response into a refresh invert it 8ms is 0.008s. 1/0.008 is 125Hz

Good call, thats the route I went down when we where looking for ours, ended up with some SONYs. I use my TFT for photoprocessing without and problems with the captures from my Canon 300D, works well. Although next time I might go for a wide screen for all those photoshop palates!

response time isnt everything, tho it is important with games.
Reading web pages like this with small text is much clearer with a crt.

one thing to think about with CRT's though...they do have a better brightness during the day than most TFT's.

I love TFT's, Sair and I have 2, but with more space imminent for me, I'll be going back to CRT
