Which Shuttle should I go for...

Hi I'm just about to build a PC for the first time, so I thought I'd get some practice, so to speak, by building a PC for my Dad, since hes gonna pay for his. Now he wants a small PC, so I thought one of the shuttle sized PCs would be good.

But I'm stumped on which one to get, whats the best suggestion for these main requirements?:

    Athlon 64 3000+ (939)
    GeForce FX5600
    512Mb Ram
    Firewire
    Wireless Network Card
and must be quiet as possible

    Many thnx for any replies.

Well, I'm biased as I run an SN95............so get one of those......

If you wanted, you could drop back to an SN85 and save yourself a little bit of money, but to be honest, for the difference in price and specs, the SN95 is a better buy.

Just out of interest, do you already have all those parts you mentioned, or is that your 'to buy' list?

Well yes and no, I already have the Graphics Card and the Wireless Card, but take note that this computer is just for normal use and not for anything amazing, the only possible amazing bit of software that'll probably be used on it is the Myst series games.

A friend of mine has this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=236311 and swears that it's the best he has owned Shuttle wise.

He has quite a bit of knowledge when it comes to the shuttle PC's plus he changes the case almost as frequently as he changes his underwear so he knows the shuttle market quite well lol

Only problem with that case (and I'm not doubting your friend's competence) is that it's S775, which is Intel, and it clearly stated in the thread that this was for an S939 Athlon64 (the better choice imho).

As it stands, the SN85 or SN95 are the 2 choices.

You could go for an SK83 if you wanted to, but then you would be limiting yourself to a S754 A64, and that would limit your upgrade options in the future.

Sorry this could be my "in-comptence" in actual fact. The case he has is for the AMD Athlon 64, it looks the same as the one I have posted.

Think that I have just posted a pic of the wrong case lol

Just spoken with him, the case he reccomends is at the bottom of this page http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/AMD_Shuttle.html the shuttle Shuttle XPC SN25P.

Hope this helps, sorry for the wrong post lol

You can make most shuttles quieter by removing the internal 80mm fan, and instead fitting a low noise 120mm fan (with a finger guard) externaly using a duct. Obvously it will be a little ugly compared with an internal fan but most people put their PC up against a wall so it won't show.

Alternatively, if your Dad has the budget, then perhaps an external water cooling solution such as a Zalman Renonator (Rave Reviewed in Hexus about a year ago) would be a solution. Then the Shuttle's main fan would only be cooling the case, so you can undervolt it, or use a thermostatic controler.

Nate - The SN25P is a blinding piece of kit......but is PCI-E based, and so no good for the AGP card that Chiss has......but still, a top notch Shuttle.

Ad the Sn95 has a 92mm fan, which is fairly quiet......it's the g/card in mine (6800GT) that makes the most noise.....!

Hey, i'd go for an aopen Pentium M based system, so quite i've got one running in my bedroom and the GF doesnt complain

Nice and fast too, i can SuperPI quick than my Northwood running @ 3.9GHz
and it's only got 1 super quite 70mm fan

EZ855 has space for full height AGP & PCI cards
MZ855-II has external PSU & Half Height AGP & PCI

    Sorry once again, ooopps lol

Shuttles arn't my bag tbh and I totally missed the AGP graphics card thing. Just remember going around to his house and him saying how good his shuttle was.

Normally when he bleats on about something it normally means its worth looking at because he does quite a bit of research before buying anything.

I just skim the information / knowledge from him then. In this case I have definately skimmed far to little lol

The SN85G4 is SKT 754. Same as the SK83.

Your only choice if you want an AGP SKT939 is the SN95G5. Its onto V3 now which has fixed many of the minor problems with the orginal V1,V2.

But you dont have the PCI-E with SK754 and there is less upgrade potential.

Although the G4 case is very nice
