Question 7800GTX or X800GTO2 ? Shader Model 3 Worth It?

as title suggests people... also big thing is that i could afford the 7800gtx but then will shader model 3 be worth it? and why hasn't it been implemented into ths x800gto2? i mean does the x800xt/850xt have it? anyhow your verdicts on which one to go for and why, also your opinions on shader model 3...

    interested to see opinions

do you think shader model 3 will make that much difference? i mean i have a 9800pro ATM for instance and that can look pretty nice within its limits, but i mean say i was running exact same card and settings with shader model 3 would i notice?
Also... Should I order one soon? ( could buy one friday...) i mean will they become limited soon??? (OcUk)??? or will they drop price again? because around friday next month i should have enough money LOL that will be xmas nearly now that i think about it:O should i wait to january sales then??? so tempting but sods law eh?

Well your comparing 2 different cards 1 is mid end that can be seriousley overclocked and be damm fast other is high end at stock with massive price differences. As far as i know none of the ATI cards before the new x1... series have shader model 3 - now if that article about the 7800gtx is true then the importance of SM3.0 decreases. If its not in Nvidas current flagship card then why bother trying to implement it anywhere else - what does it actually give to the gamer? Ive yet to see anything. OCUK said that bar 60 units going to one reatailer in the north they expected to have all the stock of the x800gto2 in europe. They were also selling the gto2 seemingly as OEM. the thing is = You can now buy the reatail version of the x800gto2 from Microdirect and tekheads as well as OCUK. Ive just orderd mine from MD about 30 mins ago. Stocks will run out but i think there are more out there than first thought - i wouldent wait too long tho just to be safe - its very possible im wrong. To be honest the 7800gtx is the better card that needs no modding - if u can afford it be happy cuase it will do all it wants u too. IF u want to save some money x800gto2.. IF you play at high frame rates on 19" flatscreens then get the 7800 anything less x800 gto2 all the way - hope thats on some use -

    yeh indeed.cheers zulander
and besides by the time shader model 3 is in free flow it wont be running smooth on the cards that have it anyway.well prolly lol... you'd still get better preformance with shader model 2 i expect yeah prolly gonna wait till january sales now to get pc so prolly none left but by then 7800gtx be as cheap as gt i expect because something else insane will be on the market

anyhow any other peoples opinions are welcome

EDIT: whats the default cooler like for the flash and overclock on the X800GTO2?

The default cooler's fine although it can be changed if you want to REALLY push the card using ATiTool.

Regarding Shader Model 3.0 - read this and make up your own mind. I know what I think...

its tempting but aparently according to a previous link in this thread, the 7800gt doesn't even run shader model 3 properly in benchmarking tests... but i dunno i wont prolly be buying untill jan sales so by then X800GTO2 will be phaised out and a X1800XL will prolly be the better option?

If you are tossing up between them, go the 7800, shadermodel 3 is worth it imo, HDR in farcry is just SOO pretty, but you wont notice how good it is untill you sit 2 computers next to eachother, one with, one without, the visual difference is just simply stunning.

MD have sold out of the x800gto2 by the looks of things so by xmas the only decider will be wich flagship card do you want. Ull be in that nice place known as a no loose situation and by then the 7800gtx may have come down a few quid as well.
