After much deliberation (aka pulling hair out trying to decide what to buy), I've decided on getting the following for an upgrade, mainly for gaming reasons:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
MSI Neo2 Platinum nForce 3 Ultra (want to hang onto my 9800 PRO)
Corsair Value 2x512MB PC3200 (VS512MB400C3)
I'm a bit concerned with the amount of memory, 1GB seems a tad low and so I'm wondering about the alternatives, Battlefield 2 for example has a minimum spec of 512MB and that can only increase as games get more resource hungry.
Using another 2x512 modules of the corsair memory in DIMM2 and DIMM3 would drop the speed from DDR400 to DDR333 so that option is out.
I could go with 4 DIMMS of single ranked e.g. 1GB + 1GB + 512GB + 512GB, which would keep the speed at DDR400 I think. From what I've been reading, 4GB (1GB + 1GB + 1GB + 1GB) is possible but the limitation on the southbridge means the system only picks up 3GB.
Mixing the double ranked corsair and single ranked modules would also drop the speed.
Thing is, I haven't heard much about single ranked memory at all and kingston seem to be the only big manufacturer providing it. It'd be a shame not to get the corsair because it's after getting some sweet reviews. Anybody come up against this problem before ?
While we're on the subject, does this upgrade look ok ? I'll be upgrading again next year to a PCI-E board/card next year so it'll only have to do me til then.
