3x 15" LCDs"
Dude... Why?
21" P275 for my primary monitor, 21" Trinitron for my TV, faulty C220P & faulty Diamondtron which I might repair one day, 21" SGI Trinitron as a spare.
14" TV came with the room & has never been used, but has to sit there nonetheless.
3x 17" LCDs are faulty (all have dead PSU boards from PAT tests, so should be repairable). 1x 17" LCD & 3x 15" LCDs were my primary monitors in my old quad setup before I built my new machine, bought the P275 & retired 3x of my old machines.
So a lot of them are faulty & awaiting repairs, whilst another lot are surplus to requirement but might be useful in the future.

Your C.S Lewis collection seems to be missing the cosmic trilogy. Worth a read.
I see Illium to, thats been sat on my desk unread for a couple of years now.. oops, any good?
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Ilium is great. Really, really good. Even my wife loved it, and she's not a sci fi fan.
I've not read the CS Lewis stuff. It was in the book club at work, and got it for my son. Bit preamture, perhaps: he's only 2 :)

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
My setup has changed quite a bit in the last week or two.
Firstly I've replaced my Apple Macbook Pro with a newer model. I'd had the old one for 2 years so it was time for an upgrade. The new one is one of the latest penryn ones with an LED screen. Its a great little machine.
Here's a pic of the swap over happening:
http://gordyhand.co.uk/gallery/d/5544-1/DSCF6614.jpg
I've also treated myself to a griffin elevator and a new apple keyboard. The griffin elevator really helps my neck and the apple keyboard is great to type on. The last purchase was an apple iPhone as the £100 off offer was just too tempting!
Here is a shot of it all in place:

Also in shot is my HP all in one printer, sony lcd tv logitech mx revolution mouse and netgear wireless N router.

you do know the running cost of a Photocopier in electricity alone is not really worth it unless you are doing HUGE amounts of printing.

You can turn it off when you're not actually printing...

There will also be issues with power consumption upon turning the thing on as well though, right? One of those this Taxi costs £10 to get in and charges £2 per mile and this other one is £5 to get in but only £3 per mile things.

Well yes, but the difference in power consumption isn't really going to hit as hard as your example makes out. I certainly didn't notice a hike in my power usage when I bought my huge old HP LJ4.
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
The numbers in the example were arbitrary and did not intend to offer any real numerical insight to the problem. I do obviously agree that if it's not being used very regularly it's going to be using a unnecessary amounts of power. I just assume that with these things that there is going to be some power used when booting up, just like with a car or a long fluorescent lamp.
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Still, unless he's leaving it on all day long & printing sporadically to it (i.e. leaving long enough between jobs that it spins down & has to boot up again with each subsequent job) I doubt it's going to cause much of a hike. Boiling the kettle twice more each day would probably make a bigger difference.

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
I thought I would share with you where I have been living for the last 10 months (with still another 7 months to go!). This is my desk space. Plenty of room, but lack of plug sockets, thus the 2 power splitters on the notice board. Since it gets inspected every week, I have to at least look like I'm tidying all the wires up! :P
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9594/pchr7.jpg
And here is a shot of the room. Well one half of it. It's symetrical, so there's 4 bedspaces in total, although there's only 3 of us in this room, so we've dismantled the spare bed, stuck a couple of beer fridges under the desk and put a kettle and our breakfast stuff in it for our "breakfast bar" area.

Yes, the guy next to me has Transformers bedding and a Hello Kitty toy! His other bedding is pink incidently...

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Erm, what happens if you, er, you know, get lucky?
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Yeah, that can be a problem! :P But there are 2 single man rooms in the block that are empty for such occasions. Since most people now have long-term GFs or are married, it tends not to happen that often.
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
why are there padlocks on your wardrobe? do you not trust your flatmates?:P
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
We are allowed beer and wine in the block, but not spirits. When we get inspected, they are not allowed to look in lockers unless they get permission (we are at lessons when they do go round). The padlocks just reinforce that rule! :P

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Moved back home for the summer, and to my suprise I was actually able to create a space as good as it was at uni. Had to trade in the older larger speakers for much smaller ones (Tannoy MX series surround sound for warfedale 9 series) I also have a PS3 setup now, which I have connected via DVI to the 2407, and use the HDMI switch on the amp to switch between PC and PS3 (audibly and visually).

Lee`: Is that a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW by any chance?
Ive got 2 side by side and have been thinking about making the switch to 24's for a while, and its good to be able to see them side by side!
Do you find it to be a dramatic step up?
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Yep, it's a 205BW. I've actually just sold my AV amp and switched back down to stereo, (I really couldn't justify it in such a small setup) so I have them actually side by side now.
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/8...mera011eg7.jpg
As you can see the dell 2407 is brighter and gives a better picture than the 205BW, but I think any SVA panel would be better. Screen space size, the 24" makes a bigger jump than you would think from 20".
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
Your not helping! I have been thinking about jumping from my pair of 205BW's to possibly 2x Dell 24's . . . . . . .
Whats the height adjustment like on the Dell?
-
Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
That photo looks like it is at its highest. It can go all the way down until the bottom is about an inch from the desk (almost touching the stand). In portrait there's a similar clearance at its highest (ie, you can't lower it really).
You should have mentioned something when we were at the LAN; I could have demonstrated it for you.

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
It is made of towelling, but it's a football scarf from Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Sweating publicly is a tad rude, so their scarves are towelling to have a quick wipe down during a game.
There's also a Croatia Zagreb scarf and a couple of Wimbledon ones there too.
And yes, sometimes a 1 hour race can get a little warm!

I'll have to post a photo of my foot high Lulu from FFX. Sold it on ebay recently, but it was v cool. Had it in myoffice for a while, and it was strange in that EVERYONE who came in would pick it up while talking to me, and look up her skirt. Everyone. Young, old, men, women, almost subconsciously while still talking to me.
More than once I would stop the conversation and say "what are you doing?", and they would experience a "back to earth" moment.
Still have an R2D2 phone and foot high darth vader at home.

Re: Show Us Your Workspace/Desk
lol no, in the starbucks mug I mean... where did you think I had seymour lol? I can see no spiky blue haired guys anywhere lol :P If you have X-Ray vision though you might have spotted the Paine keyring buried deep down in that mug lol :P (Was totally going for the Wakka one tho :( )
Oh and forgive the cables lol, I did at one time have them a little better than that but some of the cables were just too short to tidy after assembly and therefor had to just be pushed to one side :P
I would however tidy it if Staffsmike, as I have requested before by PM lol, show us some tips and tricks for cable tidying as someone like me is clueless lol :P
But yeah, the cookie is still up for grabs for the person who identifies who the lil guy thing in my Starbugs Mug is :P (Hint, its not FF)
