Fire in the Hall

oh boy, i decided to overclock my pc spme more, heard the dreaded beeps so had to take my case panel out to reset the cmos bios jumper, done all that placed the cover back on
(i was lucky i didnt screw the panel back on)
put the pc on, all of a sudden black smoke started to pour out of the fan outlet from the window panel fan

at this time the led fan had turned off. i go to press the power botton (damn thing was on a 4 second power off mode).
waiting for the four seconds to count down i noticed a flame had started up in my case, (nice and bright and orange and ...did i mention bright?)
one hand was on the power button and the other was trying to remove the panel off. (note on a normal day i would just switch the psu off)

Ok then, the power had gone off and i managed to take the case off and i saw the "fire".

i blew and blew and the flame started to get bigger, i manged to puff the fire out after a few attempts.

the remains (rip)


tried the pc after running a big fan to get rid of the smoke and thankfully everything is working fine

that was a close 1
looks like i shorted the wire from the led fan onto the case or something similar!

...but most of all the pc lives on

were the wires bare to start with?

my psu will auto switch off if theres any major shorts

looks like somming shorted on ur case, which pulled loooots of current thru the thin wire, it got hot and insulation melted, then boiled, then burned nice and bright

I did the same with mine and it didn't turn off (Enermax 350watt) - it normally does when something shorts, but in my case a bare wire (that had worked it's way out of a molex) had somehow found a nice, snug place to reside - in the end of another molex. Lots of smoke and melted wire. I just cut them off the PSU and sealed up the ends. It looked pretty damn scary at the time though - melted the molex too!

Shouldnt there be some sort of covering around the led fan, my akasa has a yellow strip around it covering the wires.

perhaps get some elec tape?

yep that was defo a short!!

ahd a similar thing happen to me but that was cause the wires were trapped by the fan and the crushing effect basically over time caused the short!

What are those Green wires wrapped around the bottom bays for?

Are those the ebuyer LED fans? I had exactly the same problem with one of them in my case, the wire seems to be bare where it attaches to the casing of the fan which caused mine to blow up! Thankfully my enermax turned itself off before any more damage could be done

usb ports/ firewire/ mic connections for the front. i dont use em

the fan was a nice and bright and blue one that came with the case! (rip to it all now) i got a thermaltake Xasier III

A similar thing happened to the cable of my internal speaker - it didn't burst into flames, but started smoking (and de-soldered itself from the motherboard).

I'm just hoping for no future problems, for if there are I wont be able to hear the error beeps .

LOL, had my floppy drive go up in smoke...that was damn scary...
