Socket 939 Opterons - The next overclockers chip?

There's a lot of talk at the moment about the 1xx opterons moving over to socket 939. They will be the equivalent of San Diego cores, so they have 1MB L2 cache, and will come clocked as low as 1.8GHz. The bonus is that the socket 939 Opteron will no longer required ECC or registered RAM, regular unbuffered RAM will do.

So basically this chip is ideal for the budget conscious overclocker. The Opteron 144 running at 1.8GHz should cost as little as the similarly clocked venice 3000+ or 3200+, but with twice as much cache. And according to this guy at XS, will overclock as high as 2.8GHz: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...4&page=1&pp=25

So, anyone know where we can find these beauties in the UK?

Nice, but what is the point of them? Negates the whole Opteron/ECC reg ram uber reliability ethos. Just a re-badged San Diago with a locked multi really.

Mind U, I pushed my Opti 150 to 2616 (12*218) as I had ltd edit OCZ PC3500 Ecc Reg ram.

Not really sure why AMD decided on this move, but it's either:

    1) A gift for the enthusiasts (unlikely)
    or
    2) A way to get Opterons into cheap workstations/servers

Anyway at the moment these chips are too elusive. Hopefully within the next few weeks or days they'll be available for us all. So keep an eye out.

I hope these processors turn up soon to try - they sound like an interesting way to get more cache for cheaper. Does anyone know yet whether these are fully multiplier unlocked or just multiplier down-unlocked?

Definately multi-locked, as are all opti's.
