    PSU Power output

The thread about modular PSUs has got me thinking, especially after somebody asked me about this today..

A PSU only outputs what is drawn from the system doesn't it?
So say a 580W PSU won't use more electricity than a 350W for example?
    (if running the same system).

Thats what I've always thought, hope I'm correct or no doubt my flatmates will moan at me about electricity usage when I get a 580W

We cannot choose what we are.. but what are we but the sum of our choices?

Yeah it only draws what it needs from the mains, but please be aware that psus aren't the most efficient things on the planet for instance...

PSU is using 300watts internally and it's drawing 390watts from the mains because ~30% is lost due to heat etc.

Check the hexus psu roundup to see all the figures/explanation etc, it's a really good read!

The 580modular isn't in the roundup

have read some of it.. but I didn't find it the easiest article to read..
I tend to just skip to the comparison tables (or graphs etc. e.g. benchmarks with graphics cards).. it didn't have one though.

That should give you some idea of the general efficiency for psus
