Just noticed, Custom PC has a PSU Lab this month... might be an idea to have a read of it!
Went to Asda this evening, bought Custom PC, read the reviews...... forget about modular, it's unimportant compared to stability... better to have a stable power supply that does what it's meant to rather than one that looks cool. I'd probably be told off for spiling the beans from a commercial PC mag and denying them circulation, but surfice it to say the best one from the stats they published, and in their own judgement, cost 80 quid, which is very reasonable, and it's nVidia SLI certified with all the latest connectors.
Half of the 31 PSU's on test failed in one way or another.
I strongly advise if you're going to spend 70 or 80 quid on a PSU to read the review and draw your own conclusions, the mag is only £3.99 and you can be smug afterwards that you bought a PSU that was scientifically tested NOT to destruction as it performed as it should!
yeah but what you want is.. stability and modular based modular is the way forward.. years back I wished for a modular PSU.
We cannot choose what we are.. but what are we but the sum of our choices?
You're right of course, and if the truth be told I also like having blue bling-bling lights in mine too, matches the blue lights everywhere else, none of which I can see as I don't have a window in my case, but... errrr.... I know they are there and I am sure my PC runs so much quicker with them. Right.
As I said in an earlier post modular isn't much use if you have to plug everything in because you need the whole lot, and if you can't actually buy different leads. I for one would be happy to pay, say, an extra 20 quid on modular leads that were pretty much exactly the right length with exactly the right connectors on.
I'm just glad for the first time in my life that I have a PSU that has braided cables so I don't have to cable clip them or spiral wrap them to avoid spaghetti junction.
A PSU with stability AND modular functionality would most definitely be best! (And braided cables!)
Isn't that what the hyper has?A PSU with stability AND modular functionality would most definitely be best! (And braided cables!)
Though yes braiding cables yourself takes forever.. and is very tiresome.
We cannot choose what we are.. but what are we but the sum of our choices?
It really doesnt matter if you chose Hiper or Tagan.. they're both excellent power supplies... I just always had the impression that Tagan was slightly cheaper.. if they're both priced similar, then choose the one that gives u all the bling bling lights..
Me want Ultrabook
The Hiper in the review apparently died at full load - has anyone actually had this happen? Sounds a bit odd to me - was wondering if it is a design flaw or just a dodgy sampleOriginally Posted by icq3800846
i doubt it was a dodgy sample as many famous names failed the test involved running the PSU at 100% over 2 days.Originally Posted by mike_dowler
abit unrealistic but then thats why these thing come with 3 years warranty
I know i really struggled to find a PSU to cope with my systems load.. I managed to kill 2 enermax PSU's, and finally decided to run 2 together (solved my problems)
I do have to say i'm extremely impressed with the modular 530watt Tagan in my system.. as u can imagine, running 2 psu's can be very messy inside (especially with my setup), so the detachin cables helped alot.. and the stability is awesome.
my current system:
Asus P5WD2 Premium i955X
Intel Pentium D 830 Dual Core 2 X 3.0GHz
2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 8000UL
256MB ATI X800XL
Saphire Rage Theatre 550 TV Tuner
24" Dell Widescreen TFT
Promise SX6000 Raid5 Card
2 x 74GB Raptors (Raid 1)
2 x 36GB Raptors (Raid 0)
6 x 400GB Seagate ATA100's (Raid 5 - 2TB with redundancy)
2 x 300GB Maxtor SATA (Raid 0)
2 x 250GB WD SATA
Philips 16X DVD-Writer / NEC 3520 16X Writer
1200VA UPS
600 watt Enermax coupled with 530 watt Tagan PSU
Lian Li PC-70 (Modded for dual PSU)
Keep in mind that the 600watt enermax cold NOT cope with my system (i had to disable 4 hard drives just to get it to boot). Now i actually have the tagan doing most the work.. powers the motherboard, graphics card, and the raptors.. the enermax does the remainder
^ do all the lights in your house dim when you boot that thing up? ..
I am curious why a home-user would need almost 3TB of storage for legal use.. (even illegal use I'm having a difficult time imagining how much stuff you could really need).
you either have a massive pr0n collection, or you've ripped about a thousand DVDs you own.. can't really think of much else.
Or maybe you have an addiction to storage
We cannot choose what we are.. but what are we but the sum of our choices?
I have a couple of systems adding up to 1.5TB and I'm going to add another 2 200GB soon.. I have also a 800GB (2 x 400) network drive sharing between me wife n i thats 80% full... not suprising tbh.. but putting all of them in ONE system is kinda new for a home pc..
Me want Ultrabook
I have finally gotten my Antec Neopower 480 Watts psu fitted in my Tt Lanfire case, and I am quite pleased with the fact that this psu is modular too, another one to watch out for! The Thermaltake Lanfire isn't the roomiest of cases so having a modular psu is a must! Also, the fact that this psu has no LED's is a pluspoint from a modder's point of view, your choice of colours used in other case lighting is not limited or predetermined by the colour of psu. I am actually looking at getting an Akasa Eclipse 62 or the SavRow SR-71 (same case, just different name) to replace my Thermaltake Lanfire case. I am hoping to get some green 120mm fans in there and some other green stuff, like uv cables, I think that will look quite good in an all black case.

I know you guys have all been talking about gaming machines, and low noise PSUs, but I'm looking for an inexpensive PSU, to put into a machine I use just for storage. It did have a 350W, and I upgraded to a 400W, but that is just as loud.
The machine has 2 harddrives, and two DVD drives (one a burner) - may transfer it all to a larger case to assist air flow, as the drives are running hot (50 degrees). Perhaps add a large expeller fan to cool the drives.
Cheers for any direction
You should give us all a shout there m8.. start a new thread with your question as title.. that makes replies come much faster...Originally Posted by KermitTheFrog
running 3 HDD and several opticals with a lowish Northwood or AXP wont burn anything more than 200W.. A healthy 300W or 350ish PSU should keep you happy.. (I'm assuming you're not running anything exotic on the graphics end like a 6800Ultra).. Fortron or FSP makes outstanding low wattage PSU.. you should ahve a look at them.. alternatively I've heard Seasonic makes really good low wat PSUs as well..
Never had much experience in low wattage PSU other than the 2 250W FSPs from my 2 acient Athlon 1.3G TBirds..

Ahh haven't checked up on this thread for a while. I was going to buy cpc the other day but totally forgot.
So the tagan modular seems to be the one!
