Generally, but not always. The difference between what a low quality PSU can put out compared to its rating and the difference between what a high quality PSU can put out compared to its, can be huge.

For instance, I'd imagine a 400W decent PSU(Antec Enermax) would actually provide quite alot more power then a 600W Q-tec.

The advice that you quoted by me was regarding good power supplies. A 500W good power supply is more then almost anyone will need. Many would find a 500 Q-tec wouldn't power their system, simply because those things are the worst piles of crap I've ever had the pleasure of not laying eyes on.

Does anyone know the dB ratings of the Seasonic devices, as they aren't mentioned on scan?

    Cheers.

No, but do some googling and someone has most likely either given a subjective or measured opinion. First thing to check would be the hexus power supply guide, I think they might have done a seasonic, cant remember for sure, they might mention noise.

Looking at Seasonic's rather basic website, it looks like at low or nominal load the noise is around 25dB which increases with the load. I can't see any figures except on a graph which shows 50 . at a full load. Ominously, the 25dB rating is for 75w of load which is fine for a PIII system but a little insubstantial for anything from the 21st century. Mind you, I'm rubbish at reading timetables let alone charts and graphs so if I'm interpreting it incorrectly feel free to humble me

Try the reviews section of silentpcreview, they are some of the quietest psus out there. Mine is seriously quiet even under load, i can't hear it above my undervolted 120mm fans and seagate 7200.7 pata drive.

I've had a look at the Silentium range from Arctic Cooling, which provide more graphs/etc. However they do use a "special" Seasonic PSU, and it 350W, which is more than enough for me to use as a server.

Just need to find out if Scan can do the T2, which is all silver, and front access slots, but if not then T1 will fit me.

    Matt

PS Also had a look at the roundup, thanks for point me in that direction, but no Seasonic - however it looks like they enjoyed themselves!

I came across a review of the Seasonic 600 compared to one of its competitors they guy recorded noise from each the seasonic was very quiet, infact I seriously doubt my hiper is as quiet as the seasonic as it has 2 fans and 1 is an 80x15 and we know these are not so quiet, infact I wonder if you can unplug it?

The only downside of the Seasonic is it isnt modular or have its cables braided, however they are twisted and you do get a tidy kit with it

He's using the 480 U1. I've been trying to help him with some fairly serious problems over in a thread in Scan@Hexus. http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=56598

To be honest, I've come to the conclusion that either the Tagan is faulty, or they aren't exactly honest about their 5.0V rails. They make a claim of 48A on the 5V rail, while Seasonic make a claim of only 30A on their 5V rail, yet they rate their PSU 120W higher then the tagan. S'hard to know, I should do some sums but I'm knackered and have a LAN I need to get up early for.
