i5 Upgrade - Bit of Advice (Reassurance?) Needed

I'm looking to upgrade my current system:

Gigabyte 965P-DS3
E6300 C2D (1.86GHz overclocked to 3.15GHz)
4 x 2GB OCZ 6400

Ati 4770
2 x 500GB, 1 x 1TB, 1 x 160GB Hard Drives
Corsair 520HX
2 x IDE optical drives
Akasa Zen
Windows 7

PCI TV Tuner card
Scythe Ninja rev. B cooler

If I were to buy a new Core 2 Duo/Quad, I would need a newer motherboard. At that point, I may as well spend the money on something newer like i5.

I want to keep the lower half of the specs above and replace the top three. Before I plonk the cash on it all, I would like some reassurance on my choices. I'm thinking around about £300 for CPU, Motherboard, and RAM.

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3 @ £98

i5 750 @ £151

Corsair TW3X4G1333C9A - 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-10666 9-9-9-24 @ £80


Which makes about £330. Is there anything you would change? Can I use my HX520 PSU with it all?

I assume 1156 uses a different cooler mounting system to 775, so I would need to buy replacement clips for the Ninja?

You could probably save a tenner on RAM if you look around but thats no big deal. Some of the motherboards for 1156 actually use the same push pin config as LGA 775 because it's common on coolers. I'm not sure for this motherboard though, it might have both or only 1156. In which case you would need replacement clips like you said. Motherboard looks absolutely fine except that it has only 1 IDE port, so I would replace one of them if I was you, as 2 IDE ports on a new motherboard is hard to find.

The 1156 uses the same mounting system, however the holes in the motherboard are slightly further apart, so the 775 clips would not fit.
You should be able to get a set of scythe 1156 clips so you can fit your ninja.

However the Red one at CAS 9-9-9-24 Timings is still going to be better than the corsair memory and slightly cheaper at £76

Thanks, guys. I didn't get round to replying to this thread after I bought it. I ordered on Sunday and got the bits on Tuesday. I plugged it all in to be greeted with lots of short beeps, which is apparently a power problem. After checking all the cables with no luck I got on the laptop and found out the P55-UD3 doesn't like RAM only in the two left slots.

After it booted, I just left my Windows 7 drive in with the intention of reinstalling Windows. I had heard of people not reinstalling W7 so thought I would try it before spending time wiping everything. It booted in low graphics and after a few minutes told me to reboot. When I did, it was all working fine and I've had no problems since. I just had to reactivate Windows over the phone.

I've noticed most games have had a 20-30fps boost, at least. I don't think any have used more than 50%, but that will be because they aren't optimised for four cores.

The Scythe Ninja has a clip similar to the second, where it's one piece. I bought that one but it doesn't have the two mounting holes nearer the middle like it does in the photo. I might be able to get away with drilling some holes. I'm using the stock cooler for now, which seems ok and quiet, apart from a faint buzzing.

Normally the ram slots are colour coded, so you want the ram in two of the slots that are the same colour
(execption to this rule is the older msi motherboards 775 & am2+ although they now do it sensibly 1 colour per channel like every other make does)

I'm aware of that. I originally had the ram in the two blue slots, but it seems this particular board needs them to be in the white slots. They're blue white blue white, which is what I meant by two left slots.
