    hard drive evolution?

So, wheres the raptor compitition at? Or are they gona remain unchalenged for a year or 2 more? I know the Max 10's are the second fastest after the rap. but why havnt any newer drives come out?

Has storage stoped progressing in speed? Every month theres a faster cpu, then comes out a new GPU but never a faster HDD...

or is the future here already?

I was under the impression the T7K250 was faster than the Max 10's

But i'm waiting for new raptors (so could be a long wait...)

i remember reading about 100gb flash SCSI drives, not avaliable for consumers yet though

Hybrid drives are supposed to be the next step , a normal drive waith a gigabyte or two of flash memory to act as a cache. No idea how much performance will increase. Probably only an incremental improvement.

    Hello
The lack of competition is very frustrating!.
At least the Raptors aren't quite so pricey now, but if there was any competition then there might be some bigger capacity 10K drives. Unless of course there is a technical limit on the size of disk platters spinning at such a high speed.
It really feels like that there ought to be a 150-200Gb 10K drive out there by now!
Looks like more focus has been placed on capacity than speed. Similar thing happening with digitial cameras, with more obsession with megapixels than optical zoom.
But hopefully now that we've reached the frighteningly high 500Gb capacity (that's a lot of data to lose!) then manufacturers will concentrate on speed.
We've got perpendicular recording coming out soon. Not sure whether that gives speed, or just makes for cheaper manufacture.
    Cheers

no competition on the raptor from the sata camp - but it is getting close. WD will probably announce a successor to the raptor the moment another SATA hd beats it, as that would kill its niche. And the sooner the better imho

hehe it makes me laugh that people say there is no competition to raptors. If you are really bothered about HDD performance and you are already paying the price premium for raptors then you have no further to look that SCSI raid.

SCSI still kill raptors at the ultra high end and to put it simply there is no need for faster drives in the consumer sector. The only things that really need raptors or scsi disk are the enterprise systems and the people who want bragging rights.

    Just my 2p

I-ram eats the raptors for breakfast

yes you can only probably have a maximum of 4Gb ( 4 x 1Gb DDR memory sticks ) on each card but thats fine for a windows installation, and 2 of these would be very nice in a RAID 0 array.

    For a quick glance at the speeds, and benchmarks check the following url ;

    Fast huh...

Don't worry - they are due out soon but they apparently only support a few chipsets at the present time

ok, the i-ram eats the raptors for breakfast, but its a waste not being sata-II and are limited to 4gb, even the games I play won't fit on that! Shame raiding them is unstable too, otherwise that would of been an option.

OK, 10k SCSI and Raptors are on equal footing, but you are looking at a few extra quid and in all honesty wanting a board with pci-x if you're looking at scsi raid. You are looking at 300gb of raptor speed storage which certainly appeals... SCSI prices are actually comparable to raptors these days, excluding controller cards.

And these days i would not choose a raptor over a new gen 7.2k rpm sata drive.

    TiG,
Glad to m be able to make you laugh! Have you really checked the price of drives?
For approx 80Gb: SATA £30, Raptor £100; SCSI £250 - don't forget to double the amounts for a RAID striping setup. And as you say that doesn't consider the SCSI controller cost - I've no idea what to look for, as my SCSI controller came with my 9Gb SCSI drive from Ebay - I just wantd to tick the "done SCSI" box. Presumably mobos with SCSI on are still for file servers and not very well packed with game features.
    Cheers

I would say that is comparable performance to the raptor, 10k rpm, 8mb cache, etc. and its £20 cheaper, and scsi.
