IBM Laptops
As far as i can tell they are some of the best around? I was looking at the basic R52. I dont need a dvd rw and it may only be a 40 gb hdd but that is easily upgradable. Also, i may buy another stick of ram from crucial to take it to 1gb to make it fly.
They may be a bit more expensive for the spec but its worth it for the quality imho.

so are they good? (bump lol)

I've a T40 and it's got fantastic build quality and the best laptop keyboard available. I don't know about that particular model though...

Over the last 6 years I've had a number of laptops from Dell, Compaq and IBM.
The ONLY ones that seemed to last, run without a problem and didn't overheat or start to become flakey, was the IBM. In fact my IBM has been on for over a year I think lol....its been plugged in and out of the cradle too many times :) (I use a laptop as a second PC)

pretty much all of the laptops I've bought in the past for business use have been IBM Thinkpads (I've got history from a T20 - every model through to a T41) and i've found them to be excellent business laptops.
I probably wouldn't use them for a "home user" though, although there are other IBM thinkpads that are not the "T" model which may be better for the average home user

T40/T41/T42/43
T series is the best from IBM I think...
They are thinner and lighter with better spec as well...

In terms of usabilty, I think Thinkpad's are fantastic. Might not offer the bang for buck, but they have the best keyboard, best trackpads, trackpoints etc Screens are okayish, but if I had the choice between what I own now (Dell Inspiron 2200) and the equivalent IBM, I'd go for the IBM even if was £100 more expensive. You don't realise how good they until you don't have them anymore. I was also reading somewhere that Lenovo has improve the build, but strengthening the chasis design etc

I've had an R40 for about almost two years and it's in the same condition now as it was when I got it out of the box, after gigging with it a dozen times or so. If you could spare the cash or sacrifice the odd feature, I'd consider one of the T series though, as it's slightly more svelt and has a mag alloy exterior rather than the plastic R series (which are still very sturdy). The trackpoint is superb - I'd have a hard time moving to another laptop and having to stroke the touch pad instead. I'm a fan of their no-nonsense black appearance too, though Lenovo are experimenting with silver on the new Z thingy, which looks okay I have to admit.

Another toot for IBM using a T40 from work, it does everything it should and nicely designed.
We have had quite a few HDD failures but we move them around alot, or maybe its the deathstar making a comeback?
