I've just been looking at the low-end Acers with Celeron processors. They seem ideal for everything else e.g. screen size, RAM, HDD etc. I was just wondering what kind of performance I can expect from a Celeron-based lappy. I'll mainly be using it at University and in schools for standard office tasks and presentations. Games are not really a priority - I have a 3200+ XP based system at home, and very little spare time thanks to my PGCE

It is not just the CPU which does battery life.
If you have a Celeron-M it will have good battery life - presuming the rest of the components are reasonable.
Pentium-M and Celeron-M consume the same amount of power (roughly).
AMD - depends which CPU.
Remember, it depends if you have a DTR, Thin and Light, and how many Cell battery for length of battery life
AMD is the little guy (more so in laptops than in desktops actually), and as such the Turions kick butt on the Centrinos (even the Celeron) in the value department.
Celeron-M is fine from a performance standpoint, but a Turion with ATI graphics kicks butt on most Intel based systems even if the Intel systems cost hundreds more.
Any Centrino benchies? I have Turion 64 benchies to compare.

I have an Acer laptop with a Celeron M 350, 1.3Ghz. It appears because it has a 1mb level2 cache, it seems quite quick. I am certainly please overall with the performance for what I paid for it. For general puprose work I would not worry about the low Ghz value. Battery life is only 1.5hrs max though.
Pentium-M's were origonally better at speed stepping (by design) than Celerons.
P-M's take less whatts than a AMD, so more batterylife.
If this is for your PGCE have you thought about tablet technology? Very good for marking other peoples work.

Other option is to buy a celeron lappy and replace it with a cheap pentium-m from ebay

The Celeron is not quick because of it's cache, it's the architecture. And your battery life is probably low because you have a small battery or you're running CPU intensive apps. I'll bet if you just run Word you could work for 3 hours even on the small battery.

The Turion64 uses less power than a Dothan when idling. It only uses more power when the CPUs are higher than 70% utilization. Even at that there is little difference.
Also, tincaman has a Celeron M, not a normal Celeron. Speedstep is identical from his machine to a Pentium M.

Some notebooks are not easy to replace the CPU, and most of the time doing so voids the warranty. Not a good idea on a new lappy.

Really? Well THIS AMD TURION64 (at the same place you're thinking about getting the Samsung X20) is cheaper and much faster than the Centrino. Also gives you 64 bit capability at no extra charge. ATI video is better also.

Actually, only the HP is faster on the CPU, but the HP also has a bigger faster HD and it's less money. The HP is a much better computer.

If its a choice between Pen-M and Cel-M, it must be the Pentium every time.
