Yeah, the 4550 is basically the same but adds DVD RAM burning. I have the 3550. It's a little noisy at full speed. Not that bad, but i would probably go for different one for a shuttle/media PC if for the living room (or limit the speed). Damn fast though and great media compatability.

I thought it was also but then noticed the 3550 whilst looking at getting 3540A but now considering 3550 as only one pound more.

I think most of us are a little behind especially if this drive is quite recent - ok there's better burning speeds to be had etc, but wheres the media to utilise that speed?

I have the 3500 and as far as I know the 3550 is the same drive with increased dual layer writing speeds. I love mine, it's been no trouble to me at all so if you're questioning whether to buy, I'd give you the green light.
