30GB disappeared from my 160Gb SATA

just got my new system, with a 160Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 8MB Cache 7200rpm HardDrive
when install xp i did nt press F6, and i saw only 130Gb available, 30GB short. i didnt think too much at that time
i ve chosen NTFS, divided hard drive into 4 virtual drive area and leave 8Gb for operating system as usual.
currently, everything seems running smoothly,130GB is enough at the moment, just interest to know,if i pressed F6 at that time, would it give that 30Gb back ?

To HDD manufacturers 1gb is 1000mb, to the OS its 1024 so you will loose some, both of my 300Gb's come up as 279Gb in windows...

130gb or 127gb? 130 is a bit of a strange number - difference between binary/decimal counting is maybe about 10gb or so in a 160gb drive.

Sounds like you are against the 137GB limit pre XP Sp1 & then losing some space due to file system.
Either install Sp1 or the HDD mfr should have an utility.

With XP Pro, if you install SP1/SP2, you should then be able to allocate the space and extend your partition to fill that space using the Computer Management tool (MMC.EXE), but I'm not sure what XP Home has, as I've never really used it..

I had that with my XP Home CD with no SP1, I used a tool samsung supplyed with my 160gb HD to make 1 160gb partion, then install over the top of it. If you formatt using XP with no SP1 then you could have the problem as BlueMagician says. Alternitivly, if you know someone with a SP1, or 2 disk, you can use that with your windows XP code.

Or if you have another PC you can get to with a CD writer, you can build your own XP SP2 disk.

The binary/decimal coding difference should mean that your 160GB shows as 149GB - sounds like the 137GB problem as mentioned.

Its possibly that, but I think its more likely you'll find your missing 30GB down the side of the sofa.
