I just got one of the Samsung SpinPoint P120S 250GB SATA2 drives as there meant to be pretty fast. There are some reviews on the internet.

I seem to recall the new Maxtors were meant to be fast...

edit: maybe not... just take a look at these graphs on THG

I thought it was the Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 10 drives that were supposedly quick?

Thats what I thought until THG said different. Hmm, time to find a better review site. Has anyone been finding THG getting worse recently? The reviews seem very one sided towards Intel as of late and seem to be written knowing full well the answer they want.

    I'll update with any findings.

edit: Anandtech seem to like the Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 10 drives and rate them somewhere near the top. http://www.anandtech.com/storage/sho...spx?i=2396&p=6

I think all of these figures depend on the configuration of the system you are using, do you have SATA-II? NCQ? etc... Isn't life complicated at the moment, gone are the days when speed was easier to measure.

WD Raptor is currently the fastest hard drive on the market. THe Spin point dirves are also very good and have been known to load apps such as levels on Far Cry quicker than the WD.

    No, no there not.

Personally, after seeing the figures for the raptors, i wouldn't go near them.

Seagate's cheater line is very well proven, i've found the maxtors run slightly quiter, but make more heat (but its probably the fact their newer that they make less sound).

If i want more space at performance speeds? Surely 120gig is enough for everyone at that speed, multimedia dosen't need to have ultra fast seak time, heck i only just got a gigabit NIC for my media center box.

I've a raptor which ia used for OS, Apps, and Games. For storage Ive got a sammy 160gb. Although I do fancy a Samsung SpinPoint P120S 250GB SATA2. These drives are meant to be fast and quiet, thumbs up all round.

    seagates here.

awesome preformance, cracking price and nice 5 yr warranty

I do have a few Maxtors with the 16 MB cache (300 Gb a piece) but they are noisier than the seagates

T7K250 is the fastest SATA non-raptor drive out their from what i've read.

Want faster? bung in a 300gb 10k scsi they are actually priced comparably to raptors for the size (4 times the size, and price)

Depends on what apps your using. Raptor drives are quickest for boot i believe?...

The Spin Point drives can out perform the Raptor with some apps. If it was me i'd go with the SATA II drive or the New seagate drives as has been recommend here.

I've just got a couple of the Samsung Spinpoint drives, they seem pretty quick to me but the important thing to me is I CAN'T HEAR THEM AT ALL, WOOHOO!
    oh, and they're hot swappable
