Upgrading an Emachine PC
My mate has an emachine pc with a 2.4Ghz Celeron cpu and I have recommended upgrading his gfx card from 64Mb Intel Extreme to a RadeonX800 +Rialto and his ram to 1Gb Corsair Value Select 270, he currently only has 256mb of ram. He wants to upgrade so that he can play GT Legends and Live for Speed. Do you think that these upgrades will work well with his cpu.

I think hed be better off building himself an athlon 64 system rather than spending money on a celeron based machine. The celeron, by the sound of it, will very quickly become the bottleneck in the system, and so is it really worth spending money on an existing system when he can get a larger performance boost from a new machine?

I had a 2.4 celron emachines before this rig, and replaces the 128 ati card for a 6600GT, and put in extra ram and hdds. Ran fine. I think I overkilled the PSU though :P

Thats probably the best solution from a cost standpoint, but you need to make sure he knows its still not gonna be an uber gaming ring, or when he comes to play say q4/bf2/fear he will be sorely dissapointed.

Thanks for the comments guys. My friend is not at all interested in FPS only really likes racing sims to be honest and he only has £250 to spend on the upgrade so buying a new pc is not an option.

Does he really need top-end kit?
Surely the likes of a X700 or 6600GT and say 512MB RAM would suffice?
Spend the rest down the pub :>

Well its not really top end kit is it? I think having 1Gb of ram is a good idea as it will just speed up the whole pc.

buying the best you can afford is always worth the money, a miser always pays twice.
