    Not turning on

I aquired an old PC today, and was intending to give it to my Dad for his new home. To make sure it was upto the task I ran S&M stress tester on it, it was running happily for a good 30mins and I went downstairs to go put my dinner in. I come up and see my monitor has gone on standby, the PC is off.

Now it won't turn back on again, I've unplugged it, left it a while, plugged it back in and still nothing. There were no case fans on this baby, and the PSU was hot before even stressing it, I guess this means a dead PSU?

Clear the CMOS, if that doesn't work only then start considering other things.

This is going to sound really noobie, but I've never had to do this. Beside the battery there are three pins with a jumper over the top two, do I move it down one, remove it, or what to clear the cmos?

move it to the other 2, leave it for at least 30 seconds, then put it back. make sure you unplug the pc from the mains tho, cause if u start the pc with teh jumper in the wrong place, well, bye bye motherboard (or the last time I did it, it did)

Does anything happen when you switch it on? leds? hard drive spin up? If absolutely nothing happens then it's the power supply

Nothing at all, not even a mini-whirr of a fan or anything.

You have two main options really:-

    1) Try jumpstarting the PSU to see if it's the motherboard or ATX power switch that is at fault.
    2) If you don't fancy that, try a different PSU in the case to see if it starts.

Not being funny, but it's not the fuse at the wall socket is it?

heheheee - how often do we forget about the main fuse! if it's not the fuse in the plug it's definately the power supply - sounds like the transformer has given up since 12v and 5v don't appear to be available.

I thought you had to put power through the board when the CMOS jumper was swapped over?
