Fitting arctic cooling
i bought quake 4 yesterday and was enjoying it a lot until snow began to fall in MP. So i have tested out the latest ATi and Omega drivers and both started off fine but the snow made its way back after about 30 minute of playing. So i touched graphics card heatsink and it was REALLY hot.
Ive just ordered Arctic cooling to replace the rather sub-standard stock cooling for my 9800XT. Only problem is i have no idea how to fit it. Im hoping one of you could link me to a really good step by steap on how to replace the stock cooling so i can be prepared when the my new stuff arrives.

I assume you are talking about the AC coolers. All ou have to do is pop the pins out on your currently cooler and sllot the new AC on and put the pins back :D Much in the same style you do for popping the zif socket brackets off :)
-
im a real novice with tinkering with PC hardware (i bought a turnkey system ) and all ive ever done with it is to replace a DVD drive. So im afraid i cant make the comparison between AC and zif socket brackets because i dont know what zif socket brackets are :(

Basically, your current heatsink is held on by two pins that go thru the graphics card and out the otherside. Unclip/unbolt these, then with a modicum of force you can remove the stock cooler. There will be some resistance due to the thermal interface material used on the core, but shouldn't be too difficult. Then with some surgical spirit, remove that and put on some arctic silver or similar, and install you new cooler. Place the new pins into the holes around the core, secure on the rear, and your done :)
Hope this helps

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Dave87 has pretty much told you everything you need to know, plus the instructions that come with it are very straight forward and easy to follow.
I found it easier to fit an Artic cooler than putting together my new TV stand - damn those glass stands, they look so simple on the outside

Bubbly, I know what you mean. Flat pack furnature is soooo annoyin.....
-
Thanks dave87
As for flatpack furniture my flatmate and i had to put together wardrobe finished it with 1 panel in the wrong way and a piece of polystyrene propping one edge so the doors would close properly LoL.

The instructions are very simple, and just remove the thermal paste with some tissue ( i use special liquid but im a geek so wey) The onlything i had trouble with is that the paste that comes with it seems to be dryed out nad so i used my own which i had. hafer some research i found that is was supposed to be like that but i had trouble putting a nice clean flat thin layer on. Mabe look at the AC website or google it would be my rec.

Thanks guys its all fitted and working. Almost had a heart attack cos my HD wasnt getting recognised, but then realised i had nudged the cable out of the mobo when putting my graphics card back in lol.

lol nice. Whats the difference in temps? or did you do it for less noise?

Its now running between 57-60 after playing quake 4 instead 86-89
-
thats a great recuction in temps there.
nice work
:)

i added an exhaust and anothercase fan to increase the airflow thru my case as well. so it wasnt just the arctic cooler
-
ahh i see, its still a decent temp slash though

Zyte, is the card a lot less quiet now??? or is it just slightly less noisy than b4 do u think? im probably getting one soon but want to gage the noise levels cheers
