    Advise a newbie.

As you can guess from the title, I'm totally and utterly new to overclocking .

I would, of course, like to learn the basics (and hopefully more in the future), so that I can make the most of my system.

    Here's my current system spec:

    (CPU) 1-Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 2.00GHz, 1993MHz, 256KB (0% Load) .:.
    (RAM) usage: 213/256MB (83.20%) .:. <-- speed = 133mhz
    (GFX) geforce4 ti4600 128mb
    (Display) 1024x768/16bit
    (OS) Windows ME (4.90 - 3000)
    (HDDs)18.7G/37.2G(50.2%) free
    [report from an irc script]

    sound card = SB Audigy

I have a few bits and bobs arriving in the mail tomorrow which will mean I will have 512mb more ram (making it 768mb total) and my OS will be upgraded to XP.

The motherboard I am using is:
    Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
    Model: D845HV
    Version: AAA63927-304
    BIOS Vendor: Intel Corp.
    BIOS Version: HV84510A.86A.0018.P04.0107302001
    BIOS Release Date: 07/30/2001
BIOS Charasteristics: Plug and Play, Flash, AGP

Any advice/help on how to get the best out of this machine will be most appreciated .

    edit: typos

As you have a P4 for overclocking you want to be looking at upping the FSB (Front Side Bus) in you BIOS

By changing this value it will increase the speeds of your cpu/ram/pci & agp slots
Usually upping by 5MHz at a time, testing and upping if you dont crash is a good method...

To help you get a better overclock you might want to look at increasing the voltages for your CPU/RAM/CHIPSET with more voltage genrally comes more stability and higher overclocks. The Drawback being more heat...

This is very brief help but there is guides available if you need more assistance... I just dont know one for P4's

what might limit you as well is your ram......
... depending how good it is will effect how high you can adjust its speed....

what kind are you using at the moment ?

it's an intel motherboard? i believe intel motherboards don't have any overclocking options on them. i maybe wrong though.

I'm using 133mhz DIMM at the moment.

Aye, it's an intel. Didn't build this computer myself... like I say I'm a newbie when it comes to tech. PC stuff.

well, for optimal performance you probably want DDR ram but your motherboard probably doesn't support it, as it's an Intel motherboard i doubt it will have any overclocking options but you can have a lok in the bios (press the 'DEL' key on start-up) to see whether there is any option to adjust the FSB from 133, if so you could try upping it a couple of Mhz at a time, also you could see whether the memory timings are adjustable, in which case you could try lowering them.

There's no FSB option in the bios :/ there's some greyed out options including FSB on the first page... cheeky basts .

And no, I don't believe this motherboard supports DDR (it's two years old after all - oops).

The thing about this board is that is about as aggressive a board from Intel as you can get. At default settings, it is already tuned to the eye-balls. Although Intel has added *some* overclocking features in the BIOS, this is no Abit or MSI... Have you checked if there's any newer BIOS updates? Some of the features may not have enabled at launch and some new ones may be added in later updates...
