Recommend me a SATA Raid Card

I got some old bits and pieces lying around (PIII 800 with 640Mb RAM, HDD, CD, Graphics card). Like to install Linux (probably Debian) and run it as a fileserver and crunch some Folding@home as well (though this won't be much being a PIII).

I need a SATA card with preferably four ports and maybe RAID so I can get a terabyte up and running. Anyone recommend me a card? Has to be backward compatible to 32bit PCI I think, I had problems with a Linksys wireless card on this mobo due to it not being PCI 2.1 compliant.

    Any pointers appreciated.

Nearly forgot - has to be cheap!!

If you are really looking for cheap you could just get a cheap SIL3114 card.
You won't be able to get 4x250GB up to 1TB in RAID0+1/5. And running 1TB Raid0 is quite a big risk to take.

Was just looking at some Maxtor 200GB drives and getting 3-4 of these for the SATA card.........

You just want a regular SATA card really, and let linux do its software raid. A proper card will cost you in the region of £300-£500

Recommend one? much of a muchness for JBOD cards, so pick something thats <insert linux distro here> compatible.

Do you know if a PIII 800 has enough horsepower to do software raid 5 in linux?

hmmm, couldn't tell you for sure but I don't see why not.

You will be running software RAID unless you spend a lot of cash anyway (more than that computers worth) on just the RAID card. You'll soon know whether you have a hardware raid controller under linux when you come to install it
