Olivetti 386 SX - to the dustbin :(

it has all the original manuals, floppy disks, keyboard and monitor. Cost £1800 when new (with printer) iirc (italian ebay bloke is getting EU 5.50 for it lol)

Am I kidding myself that this will become a modern classic in 30 years time and turn up on Antiques Roadshow going for a $$$. Well yes most probably, but it brings a tear to my eye looking through the inch thick MS-DOS manual. All those memories of forgotten DOS commands and hundreds of floppy disks.

The funny thing is that my dad was still using this for his business a couple of years ago running a DOS program on it. well actually the program is still DOS based he just has newer hardware now.

I would take piccies but it went to the dump today. I couldn't kick the wotsits out of it cos it did me proud and deserves a bit of dignity in death!!

I don't think any would be data thieves would know how to use DOS do be honest, c:\dir, well not unless they read the manual that got recycled.

Data thief 1: ooh there's an odd shaped hole in the front, what's that for?

Data thief 2: They used them there floppy disk thingys if legend is to be beleived.

Data thief 1: how would something floppy fit in there?

Not sure what the council do with these things - there was a whole skip full of monitors when I dropped it off.

Hope you didnt put your back out lifitng the thing, them old pc's were so heavy you could be mistaken for them being built out of tanks.

actually now you come to mention it the base unit was damn heavy. They don't make 'em like they used to.

some of the really old home computers (spectrums, comodores, etc) used to attach a thick metal plate on the bottom inside of the case. the belief was if it didn't weigh a ton, then everyone just thought it was a cheap pile or rubish.

It's a real shame I feel like that even with my current computers.. I don't want to get a new one unless the old one can go to a good home - it's not like they've any less good at doing the job, and all the R&D and materials than went into it..

If I can't find a friend to buy it I'll probably try and find a PC charity that can make some use of it.
