    Hard disk cables

hi, i am getting an sata 2 hard disk 250Gb Maxtor Maxline III 24x7 Reliability (7200rpm,16MB) SATA II NCQ - Lead (Pb) Free from scan. I only found out that you will need to buy the cables seperately. I got a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard so i was wondering what other cables will i need to buy for the hard disk.

You might want to get a SATA II cable from Scan if you're planning on attaching it to the NForce SATA controllers as they can make use of the new cable design: basically a metal springclip on both ends that holds the cable firmly in place If you've never owned a SATA setup you may not appreciate how flimsy the connectors can feel and it's worth the extra £2 or 3 for something that's going to remain in place without dislodging, especially if you're frequently tampering in your case like me.

Nice drive, nice board, good choice

Couple of changes but not too many. Main thing is that this is a better shielded version of the old SATA cables. Aside from that:

    - the 'L' shaped key is gone

    - slightly smaller guide size which is supposed to stop you using unshielded cables with external devices (that never stopped me before)

    - the plug is slightly deeper and the contacts are set further back (also ground contacts are presented first so that you can hot-swap drives without sending an electrical charge into them while the system is running)

    - metal spring clips to secure the cable (very handy)

    - extra layer of shielding

Thinking it through, this is how they should have made them when they first came out
