    AMD Set-Up

    Hi,

Right it is time to upgrade my current system which is a:

    P4 2.4 running at 3.2
    1gig 3500

I want to upgrade to a AMD64 system and build a shuttle with the p4. So firstly what m/b and AMD CPU should i go for? want to spend around 200 but will spend more if it is not a lot more for a lot better performance. Also do you think i should upgrade my ram or just leave it as the 3500 and buy cheap ram for the shuttle?

    Cheers,
    RealM

200 will buy a good gfx card. Since I presume you're still on AGP, and you don't have the budget to go PCIe. Your upgrade will be a waste of money.

200 quids will be enough for the motherboard and the cpu. If you buy a half-decent card like 6600/6800/6600GT it would take you up to around the 280 quids (I think?).

Cheapest upgrade would be buying AGP X800/6800 cards and stick it into your current system. Pump the ram up to 2G. Should be well under 200 quids.

Well... if you don't want an SLi board (and the 6800GT is PCI-E) then you could go for:

    Abit AN8 Ultra

    and

    AMD 64 3200+

    I noticed a loss in MULTI-TASKING performance going from a 2.4C to an AMD64 3500+

The AMD64's are the faster chips, but suck at multi-tasking imo.

No offence, but i think thats a tad wrong when comparing thoes CPU's...

The p4 2.4C is like laptop speakers when compared to half way decent set of computer speakers, there is just a noticeably huge jump in performance..

Yes there was a noticeable difference in which programs executed on the AMD64 (Faster than the P4) but when i had loads of programs running it seemed to slow right down, whereas the P4 would still be quite fast.

I wrote multi-tasking in capitials as to make sure it was read as the P4 multi-tasked much better. It's my opinion which some may not agree with, but its what i noticed. And the change for the 2.4 to the amd64 took all of about 1-2 hours, and i noticed it straight away even though the P4 was using a bloated install of XP and the AMD64 was on a fresh install.

To sumerize, the AMD was noticeably faster, but the P4 was such a good multi-tasker, it made the amd64 look much weaker in that specific area.

Cheers for the comments everyone. Its actually a 6800GT AGP though so would need a AGP board. Any ideas?

If you do go PCIe you need to replace your GFX card.

the main advantage of that over the nforce ones is the ati crossfire support, which with a 6800gt is of little use, so uinless you plan changing to ati and buying 2 expensive cards its probably not worth it,, in my opinion

DFI Street haven't much on the Crossfire board yet. They're unlocking the board next week.

    http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30

Expect Anandtech to get the first review out.

For dual gfx card solutions: I think you can only use 2 ATI cards with the Crossfire boards, and nVidia ones for the nForce4 SLI boards? So with your 6800 (moot point as it's AGP) you'll not be able to use dual gfx on the XFire board unless you buy 2xATI cards.
