No AGP cards? Don't stand for it!

With ATI and Nvidia's insistence that they will only bring out AGP version of their high-end cards if there is "sufficient demand" how are we supposed to convince them that there is such demand? Possibly by no-one buying their PCIe variants (not really fair to those who upgrade their computer every few months), but it seems to me that there is some sort of petition required for (to be fair) the vast majority. Who's with me?

    Fight the power.

i'm fine with that. its a simple matter of supply and demand - a petition will do nothing

Yeah I would go with boards that support both formats so at least you can upgrade gradually instead of everything in one go.

As it stands if I want to go for PCIe I will have to get board, processor / fan and new graphics card altogether which can be very pricey.

However with dual format boards I could go for board and processor and use my existing 6600GT AGP and ram until something comes out later down the line I could afford.

I only bring this up because it almost seems as if ATI and Nvidia are orchestrating some kind of mass conspiracy by forcing users to upgrade to PCIe and therefore also buy their chipsets. Genius. Not only do you have to buy their graphics card, but their chipset as well! This surely gets fairly close to Microsoft style anti-competition?

    http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26543

Also when the performance question is considered PCIe still represents no performance advantage over AGP. Therefore the only reason for upgrading currently is because big brother says so. Obviously in the future PCIe will undoubtedly become necessary, just like AGP did over PCI.

And speaking of "demand", how are we supposed to communicate to these people that there is demand? HELLO? LOOK! I'M DEMAND! RIGHT HERE! ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING?

I didnt know ASRock done a board with both on it, will have to look into that one as I have an ASRock board in mine also (about a year old now K7V88) is really stable and I've had no probs at all with it.

I think dual format boards is the way forwards, wonder if you can SLI an AGP and PCIe card on one of these dual boards ?

I really don't mind. Although I will have to upgrade CPU, motherboard and graphics (and possibly RAM) next time I go for a new system, it is just the cost of keeping up to date. I don't think there is much market demand for high end cards. Those with the faster machines are generally PCI Express anyway, while others can still get the 'old' AGP cards as an upgrade e.g. 6600GT.

I would have thought most PCs are sold prebuilt anyway, so to the companies building them, it doesn't make much different if its AGP or PCI Express.

For ppl thats using a 6800GT AGP like me.. thats a real big deal.. we would want to have at least a 7800GT to be ported to AGP.. I woudn't want to scrap my perfectly stable Abit AV8 3rd Eye as its a totally stellar board..

No, you can't. AGP cards are missing the SLI bridge :>

I'm not that fussed by ATI / Nvidia ceasing to support AGP. Technology becomes redundant all the time. We've had our transition period, now it's time to phase out the old tech.

Oh, and just for note, all my machines are AGP

I have a 6600GT agp card at the moment, 80-120fps on HL2 on full to those who say they suck Probably going to change to pcie next year, IMO there probably won't be a massive demand for them, as 6800s arent that much anymore for agp... And the 7 series isnt exactly cheap.

Annoying thing for me is that AGP came back in round about 1997 as it had been developed years before by IBM but was to expensive to market so we all had PCI graphics cards, things moved forwards and AGP became the norm (Matrox done one of the first AGP cards if my mind servbes me right). Now though things are going back to PCI albeit new and improved in the format of PCIe.

What will it be 2 or 3 years down the line ? New and improved AGP coming back in at 16x and 32x ?

Not everyone has the money to upgrade every 6 months, I bought my 6600GT around 3 months ago and am more than happy with it, running it alongside my XP Barton 2500+ (1.8 Ghz and 333 FSB) coupled with my Crucial PC2700 memory (333 Mhz so it all works in tandem). My CPU is now creating a bit of a bottleneck so I am wanting to upgrade, however, what is the point in going for an Athlon 64 on a board with AGP as AGP is getting phased out ? I will have to go the whole hog and buy board, processor and new VGA card to make sure that a year down the line if I want to put in a new VGA card I will have the necessary requirements to house it provided that PCIe hadnt been updated again and the PCIe version on current boards will be ok with cards coming out later.

Its a knock on effect, new technology gets released and if you want to be able to run the new games you have to upgrade. When will the game developers actually learn and realise that not every household in the UK has an average PC that even matches their minimum specs but is actually below, mine now as it stands, sits roughly in the middle of the bottom to high chart but specs on back of boxes are starting to come in at ridiculously high requirements.

No wonder alot of PC players are starting to go for the consoles, at least with that you get a few year inbetween having to get the new and latest model. My brother has now done this, he got sick of upgrading his machine to be able to run more recent games so he bought an XBox and now only uses his PC for surfing the net (he cant play HL2 offline anymore for some unknown reason and with him being on 56k cant be done with the updates) so only games he plays on it now are thing like Championship Manager. He does get loads of games for his XBox though because he can just put the disc in and play.

i demand all CPUs be socket 7! movement towards "socket 939" and "socket 755" is a conspiracy to prevent me from using my Cyrix 233 on modern high-end boards!

I demand a board with both EDO and DDR2 too.
