AFAIK 8x media is expensive and has a lot of compatibility problems, so the 8x writing would be more for the future. By the time 8x media are widely available, well priced and very compatible I would expect 8x Writers to be pretty cheap so it MAY be worth looking to a 4x +/- Writer now with the intention of upgrading to 8x in 6-12 months. There are a lot to look into depending what you want from your drive. For example if ripping is important you'll want a drive which can do so at FULL speed, many are set to a slow maximum read for ripping. Also is multi-regioning important? What about how fast it is at writing CDs? 16xCD is still quite common and IIRC that's roughly 5min per full CD. Last time I checked the NEC ND1300A was my top choice with Sony's OEM drive close behind. I lacked the cash though.

The NEC ND1300A is an excellent drive, and beats all the others according to various magazines. My mate owns one and speaks very highly of it, can be had for under £100 from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk I think.

I hate Sony however, my DVDROM drive packed up recently, and never did work brilliantly.
