I need two drivers for a RAID 0. I've decided on the Maxtor 9 plus and wondered if this is the best price online.

As best as i understand it at the minute there is no speed increase with sata except the raptor due to 10,000rpm in many cases the ide version out performs the sata for the same drive as is the case with the samsung sp1614n 160gb 7,200rpm 8mb ide 133 i'm buying also from komplett

That's a pretty good price... Couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 80GB version of the drive and it was £65 in the computer fair...

I think £7 was when they had to ship stuff all the way from Norway (often within 48 hours), now it should be a more normal P&P. Stock is saying -4 at the mo (pre-orders?) and the date they quote is '2003-10-25?'. Great drives though, IMHO the best as you can use Acoustic Man to run them silently and without it they are as fast as WD SE but much quieter and cooler.

SATA's main advantages at the mo are smaller cables, their own channel and very low CPU usage (esp nice for RAID). No need to pay extra for SATA, I'd say go for ATA100/133 but if you're going to RAID consider how much extra the cables and low CPU usage are worth paying for?

Austin: would u get a sata drive even if there same price? im htinking about getting 1 of these drives and, i hate pata, but whats ur opinion. also, would it be safe to run a true sata drive on same controler as a pata drive with converter, and can they be raided (same drive, just one being 8mb cache and sata)

also i got nf7-s, so if i got 2 of these 120gb sata drives, would it be worth me getting a pci slow sata controler instead of using onboard? and which one? cos i like having my 120gb thta i got atm on sata

If they're the same price it makes sense to get the SATA, biggest probs lie in the infancy and relative immaturity of SATA. Should be fine to run RAID with 1xSATA and 1xPATA (converted to SATA), as always the slower drive lmits the overall speed (but nothing significant if bothare close spec). I think RAID's over-rated (in real-world perf gains) and not worth the risks or effort, just MHO and once again I am in the minority.

NF7-S SATA is as good as any PCI SATA card will be AFAIK, latest drivers and BIOS (inc SIL3112?) are meant to improve things. I recall there was a problem when using some ATA100/133 HDs via the SATA converter, possibly in a RAID config, worth checking it out esp before you commit.
