    2 raided 74gig raptors or 1 150gig one?

Simple question really!, what is actually better; two 74gig raptors as a raid, or one 150gig one?

In my case I'm going from the pair to a single because I want the spare drive bay for another big storage drive, but was wondering performance wise what's best?

Just dump the large storage to an external box..

    2x74GB would be wiser since

    1. U've already got them (from ur sig)
    2. 150GB rates a suicide price, u can buy loads of drives for that price..
    3. Firewire is mostly fast enuf for mass storage purposes.

What I'm going for is the most internal possible unless there's a significant advantage of two raided over one then I would rather the bigger internal storage, so although it may be sligthly better, is it much? also RAID seems to sometimes go wrong so there's added security of the single drive, as well as being able to shift it between computers.

    I would go for 1x 150GB.

RAID-0 = Sequential read/write performance. So a bunch of benchmarks, Windows boot up, and perhaps some video editing etc (i.e. it benefit only specialised use).

The 150GB drive on the other hand improves in every other aspect.

Why the hell even bother with moving to a 150 gig, 75gigs is nothing, do yourself a favour and spend the extra money on an icybox and big external drive.

    It's not just that, it's moving from 2x75 (150) to 150+500 (650), an extra 500gb.

I take my computer around with me a lot, and don't want to have the extra effort of USB drives and more power cables/usb cables. I already have two 250gig icyboxes, and don't really want to have more!

Well then, just go for a 500gig and stick with your 74gig os drive. Thatd be my strategy anyway

It comes down to how much money you have to spend on this

If you can afford it, the 150GB Raptor *is* one generation newer than the 74GB, and do offer performance benefit.

I think I need the 150gig storage for the OS drive. I have all of my games/software installed to the same partition and it currently only has 30gigs free, so pretty much need the full space if I can.

I'm no wondering what benefits there would be of a pair of raided 150gigs over a single one?

well, RAID only benefits when ur using HDD trashing programs... scientific programs trash the HDD alot due to the large amount of page file required. Games soemtimes helps.. and general desktop stuff will benefit slightly.. Since u already have 2x74gigs.. I would just stick with it and get a firewire enabled external box.

150GB raptor is just too much money for too little gain.. actually raptors have always been that way..

If the trashing comes from random access read/write, then RAID-0 won't help either.

It's only when everything is nice and sequential where you'd see the most benefit (and admitedly, it is very significant then.. but only then).

depends how you define 'better' the single 150 will take up less space in your PC and will be a lot less hassle if you want to install Linux. The twin 74GB's will be a bit quicker, not a lot, more prone to data loss, take more space, make twice the heat etc
