Power Supplies (again)

seem to think that the Silver Power PSU will suffice for my needs (Asus A8V, 9700Pro, 2xOptical Drives, AMD 64 3200+, 200Gb DiamondMax HDD). I'm a bit concrened that it may not.

Anyone had any experience of Silver Power PSUs?

Never heard of em to be honest the review does say they are a new brand. Have u maneged to find anyone that stocks this?

The fan being mounted externally looks a bit odd, could cramp things up.
Seasonic PSUS are on deal of the day at scan today, a 430 is 58.69

Scan apparently stocks them, but don't have any in at the moment, probably as a result of the article...

The fan being mounted externally shouldn't be a problem, there's quite a bit of space inside my case...

There was a review of PSUs in CustomPC a couple of months ago. Test 35 or something. Loads of them failed the tests, and some didn't even meet the ATX spec that was claimed.

Some big names did suprisingly badly.

Top of the pile were FSP and Seasonic, who have been making PSUs for ages. I have an Enermax 330W at the moment which is fine, with good voltage levels. When I build a new PC next year, I'll probably be going for Seasonic.

According to them, that Silver Power thing will probably do for me. The power test function of that website says i need 303 watts, so it should be well within reach of that PSU.

I SERIOUSLY recommend looking through it, these PSUs were tested in lab conditions and some of the results are surprising.

I was asked to fix a system where the PSU had failed and it had taken out the CPU, Mobo and one stick of memory too... There was more frying going on in that case than a Friday night in the chippie.

I hear that! Recently built a new pc for my kid when the PSU took out his mobo and cpu. Guess that makes the PSU I bought originally for his machine was worth about £500....

Having learnt my lesson the hard way, I always try to advise folks to purchase a decent PSU. Don't skimp on a piece of hardware simply because it doesn't improve your 3DMark score. The PSU is the most important part of your system, as if it fails, it can take out everything!

Ok I was exagerating a little (artistic licence...?)

Still it was suprising how many didn't meet the specifications they claimed to meet, especially on big name PSUs.

I'm even more confused now. I had a look on scan for the Akasa one that won the mid-range section, but they don't have it, and when I looked at Misco, they seemed to have it, but with a UK code instead of an EU code. Will this be the same unit?

All is well, ordered the Akasa from Scan yesterday at 12 noon, it arrived before nine this morning. I'm going to have to go and give some positive feedback...

I've got a query, on the power unit now. Everything's working fine, but AsusProbe is telling me the 12v rail is kicking out 11.187v constantly. Is this within the ATX 2.0 parameters?
