With the way dual core has taken off recently I wouldn't be surprised if most games support it to some degree before the end of 2006.

There are a number of things that could be shifted off to a second core to get better performance and it seems so easy to do that the games developers would be foolish not to take advantage of it.

They are getting a lot of practice while doing XBox360 and PS3 development as well

I've read recently that Quake 4 and Serious Sam 2 use dual cores now. I'm not sure how efficient it is but there's a piece about this on x-bit labs comparing different CPUs

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...u-games_5.html

Note the 4800+ beats an FX-57. I think single cores at the high end of gaming are soon to be a thing of the past. How much are those FX chips again?

The differences are hardly significant, especially given the price. Have a look at part two of the article and it's made even more clear - the CPU just isn't important in games as long as it's not absolute bottom range.

Hmmm, I think that's the kind of headline CPU manufacturers don't like being published. Speaking personally, my last upgrade (a year ago btw) went on a 6800 vanilla which after some tinkering and pipe unlocking I managed to get close to GT speeds (if it wasn't for that crappy onboard memory, grrrr!). I'm still running an (overclocked!) Athlon XP with no problems and have no intention of upgrading until I can no longer get decent framerates. I can run all the latest games including FEAR and Quake 4 at decent resolutions.

When I do upgrade, I'll likely be forced to go PCIe meaning new mobo, cpu and gfx so I don't think that'll be any time soon

*loves his asrock dual sata2 motherboard*

Seriously, it's the best of both worlds - and will allow me to pick the best bang for buck card when I upgrade - whether that's AGP or PCIe.

yup I agree, if not for the reasons I've already given, that would be the one I would go for, probably with a nice opteron . Cheap, chearful and full of value for money features!

heh, well im sorry, but the new FX-60 is just totally undewhelming. Wow 200mhz more than a X24800+. You can get Opteron Dual Core's and easily clock them to at least 2.8ghz, a lot hit 3.0ghz, what is this going to bring?

I doubt that, they wouldn't be clocked at 2600mhz, if they could. CPU's are boring, M2 had better bring something good.

The FX-59 should of been 3.0ghz, and a DC 2.6ghz should of been 5200+.

I've only gone from what i've read elsewhere, so as always, take it with a pinch of salt.

The 5000+ will be out aswell though, that will be a 2.6Ghz (? maybe if naming conventions remain the same)

The FX, top line, last ever S939 FX... If the 5000+ is 2.6, I think the FX will be faster... I'll let you know in about 5 weeks time though!

2.9, 3.0 and 3.1. No idea what cooling they are using though, don't speak that language!

And I knew I read it somewhere:
