Any opinions guys? Speed, size (aslong as its 40gb+ upwards) matters not.
I presume 5400rpm drives are going to be quieter
Cheers

Well I've got 2 300GB DiamondMax 10 IDE drives and they're pretty quiet, both 7200RPM too, so I expect the smaller sizes will be as quiet, if not quieter.
Choose some types, then go to the manufacturers home page and look up the detailed specs. It should give you noise figures in the specs.

I found that the Seagates i use are pretty good as well.
If they are of a certain age the smaller drives may not be quieter. Look for things like FDB on the drive from experience Dimond max 8 and 9 and reasonably quiet bit of low level hum but nothing major and Samsung have a good rep for being quiet
You should be looking at the old seagate baracude 7200.7 drives (they are quieter than the new 7200.8), very very quiet. Next I would suggest the samsung drives. But they have changed their drive motors to another brand on the same model, so people who bought their drives early had very quiet drives, while others who bought it later foudn them noisy.
