How do pentiums IIIs compare to P4s ?
Ie, what p4 clock speed is the same as a 1GHz PIII ?

When the P4 came out a 1GHz P3 was better than a 1.4Ghz P4.
Really depends on the core of the chips, but a rough guesstimate is that a P3 is 50% faster than a P4, clock for clock. Unless SSE2 or 3 is involved, thent he P4 is about the same or better clock for clock, as the P3 doesn't have SSE2 or 3.
In light of that, I think it may be time to dig out my PIII 500MHz...
Remeber the P-M is essientally a tweaked PIII (it has better branch prediction and cache) amoungst other things.

At least 50% per clock faster, I'd actually say more like 70%. The 1gz p3 in my sig seems to rock for games. For things that require brute clockspeed they're not that good, but they're basically quite similar to good AMDs.
Er.. make that better - I remember when my comp was a p3 866.. that beat my housemates athalon xp too. (Still have the 866 chip for spares)

PIIIs are excellent in my opinion. If Intel had made a 2.0ghz Pentium 3, it would have thrashed the original 2.0ghz Pentium 4. I am also a keen supporter of Pentium Ms; I can assure you they get more from the P3s than they do the P4s

Oh, it's ridiculous to say the Pentium 3 is 50% faster, clock for clock. Think of it this way--the AthlonXP was similar to a Pentium 3 clock for clock. Just use that as a comparison (i.e. compare some of the higher clocked AthlonXPs to the pentium 4s). There just isn't a rule of thumb for comparing them.
how fast a pIII would i need for a media server, just sending out MP3s

the IPC on the P3 is awsome.
Dothan that is based on the P3 core is faster clock for clock then P4 A64 (including FX).
but this is just in raw IPC terms, actual % increase can also be a negative, especialy in multi applications or Video encoding.
In terms of percentage it can be 0 - 50 depening upon what your doing.
You wouldn't even need a pIII for that, but any P3 could handle it. Unless, of course you are serving a very large number of people at a time.Originally Posted by nvening

<Rubs his trusty P3-733EB + 128MB RIMM + Intel VC820 combo, and remembers why he kept it in the cupboard for media streaming days>

I have a dual P3 mobo at home, and a pair of celeryons - used to rock. MSI 6120 and had the chips clocked up to something crazy at the time, with special 'convertor' boards. Shame the board didnt support coppermines, just katmais
Nox
I have a P3 board - been keeping an eye on the bay - the good P3 100mhz parts still get good money !
Micromart did a little article about how a P3 would compare to todays cpus by
ocing it with a vapourchill. I cant remember the details but it kicked the arse of a P4 and
was pretty close to a AMD64 clock for clock. i think they got it to 2GHz.
