    Question opteron question

i know that the forum is saturated with these kind of threads at the moment but ive got a few questions
everbobe seems to think the AMD Opteron UP 146 is better than the 3200. I was wondering what made them cheaper when they are rated at the same speed and have a larger l2cache.

Also what does the UP stand for/mean in AMD Opteron UP 146

And finaly should i get an athlon643200+ or an AMD Opteron UP 146

    yes.
killkoy I would get the Opteron 146 - it's cheaper, has more cache than an equiv 3200+.
Doesn't make sense to me why AMD sell them so cheap but I'm not complaining

Scan shows the 'bus speed' of an Opteron as '1000MHz' while the Athlon 64s get 'up to 2000MHz'... what's all this then?

just seems to be people doing the same on here, seems everyone is just seeking bragging rights to a speed no one else can do....wot about wot this chip will do for the user? how much faster will it decode a movie for instance? if your just spending wads to make a pc so fast and then just play games that seems a bit pointless, im rather more happy to read about tests and how good a product is not how hot it gets. i can understand the need for dual core for multi tasking etc thats a need for some but to just make a games rig seems a bit of an expensive hobby.

well if you want something for encoding - want to be looking towards a Dualcore or even P4.

Point is that the current 939 Opteron CPU's are a faster(slightly) chip then the same priced A64.

Its not all about high mhz/power, overclocking has always been about getting something for nothing too

That's your opinion but others may have a different point of view - perhaps for them decoding a movie is a bit pointless?
Personally I can't see much wrong with buying a £100 CPU & making it outperform a £700 one.
Saving £600 seems like a good point to me

well we are not stopping you from buying a 3200 Venice for 20 quid more and running it at stock speeds to decode your movies.
You might aswell argue that an FX57 doesn't do much for the end user over a 3200 venice, but I sure as hell know which cpu I'd prefer. That's right the faster one, why? well it will run everything faster including decoding movies. The only argument for the Mhz/performance ratio is between chip manufacturers and different chip architetcures. The San Diego's are Venice cores with an extra 512k cache, which is what these opterons are based on.

the video decoding was an example not summit i do all day, my point was that everyone seems intent on making this new chip as fast as possible then spending loads to keep it cool and stable, all i read is people swapping parts to get that extra mhz so they can brag about it, and i say brag because i dont see anywhere where someone has actually said this chip is so fast now i can do my homework faster, no one has shown the real gain in a pc game or work situation, in other words what did u gain?
yes i agree with your point about having a chip for £100 that is better than one of £700, i can justify that but there seems a lot on these sites who just spend all day to get there chips a mhz faster than some other joe, i dont see the final result here i just see loads of cash being spent and nothing at the end of it but bragging rights, and if u said u spent all this cash to build a games rig id still say it seems an expensive and time consuming way to do it. this is just my opinion and im not looking to start everyone off on a crusade against it just asking the questions "why".

LOL, the reason is simple m8, it's like a self-satsifaction challenge. When u went far, u want to go even further, when it's get too addictive, the tiny weeny bit of number means a hell lot more than any ocer would care bout real world performance. Of course it's pointless to normal people but it's fun for us

I suppose its a similar argument to spending £100k on a Ferrari when the speed limit is 70mph. Some folk might say they're a waste of cash, but I would imagine the folk that build them get a great deal of satisfaction out of making them. It's a similar thing to the extremesystems forums - there might be a bit of value-for-money in it for these guys but I think there's far more of the challenge/skill element in it.
