Got a Tosh laptop here that always seems to be running nigh on 100% cpu useage.
Just done a full reinstall n not installed anything yet...

So far its just got a fresh XPP install, from the normal XP cd too not the tosh rebuild disks...
hmmm I had this problem on an old hp. It was very slugish and had the 100% cpu usage and was hot. All I did was strip out the cpu cleaned of the gunk re-seated it and it seem to sort it.
o and the fan was very very clogged.
I'll try the strip down 2moro then...
I don't think heat would cause this on a fresh install--there really shouldn't be enough threads to cause this problem. You're likely facing a rogue process. Open task manager and see which process is using all of cpu cycles.
have u connected to ur network and the internet scince the re install
u download viruses almost auto without a firewall

When it boots, is there an option to take you into the BIOS setup screen, and if so, is there a screen showing CPU utilisation? (unlikely on a laptop I know).
I'd be interested to know if the CPU is max'd out even before the OS is loaded.
Cleaned up the CPU n reseated the heatsink, all is well now..
Well apart from the fact the display drivers want to sit in 969*768 for some reason n the nvidia display drivers dont seem to want to support the Go 440 thats on this one, gonna have a poke about the Tosh site...
Excellent! twas a long shot when I did it. Was it gunked up much ?Originally Posted by [GSV]Trig
Like u wouldnt believe, heatsink was loose which prolly wasnt helping
Im having this same prob with my Toshiba whenver i try to play games or watch movies 100% and cant realy watch much.... tis a 5200-801 Would u be able to tell me how to strip down the cpu to clean please.... never messed in a laptop before only in a pc . Tried spraying pure air in and no good
Depends on the model, this one was a, erm (looks in bag) Satelite Pro 2100 series, theres the plastic panel with the power button n such on it, remove this, this will then show u 3 screws, 2 directly holding the keyboard down and one thats holding a metal bit in that hold a bit of PCB and the keyboard, remove all 3 screws and carefull tilt the keyboard towards you.
Then carefully lift the keyboard and you'll notice a small ribbon cable, undo the lugs holding the cable in and remove keyboard.
You will see the heatsink assembly infront of you, theres a square metal plate thats being held in with 2 screws, remove these, remove the plate.
Once the plate is removed theres a metal X holding the heatsink to the CPU, this is held in with 2 screws, well actually 4 but 2 of them you;ve already removed, remove the other 2 screws and this will allow you now to lift the heatsink a bit, the heatpipe goes out towards the left of the laptop but isnt removable without removing the entire fan assembly which, in this case we dont need to do, on the laptop I did there was a small plastic tab stuck to part of the internal case, u can lift the heatpipe over this and the tab will hold the heatpipe out of the way while you remove/clean the CPU.
Now, and this is the bit where u want to be careful, the CPU is locked into the socket so, taking a flat screwdriver you'll see a small screwhead on top the socket, turn this and the CPU will move, it'll get a bit stiff as it unlocks but this should allow u to remove the CPU, give it a clean, remove any CPU goo and then clean the bottom of the heatpipe.
Apply some new goo and carefully replace the CPU, dont force it, it should pretty much drop straight in if you have it the right way.
Now, when I screwed the X plate back on I noticed it wasnt holding the heatpipe down brilliantly so I got a bit of card, folded it and put it under the X plate to hold the heatpipe down a bit harder as it was moving around originally, be careful now as we wouldnt want to put too much presure on the CPU...
Put it back together, jobs done.
Noticed a difference straight away when I did it and if your having the same problem you should notice it too as the CPU wont be throtting back due to over heating...
PS, its your laptop, if u break it its your fault so be careful and if you do break it dont come crying to me, these instructions are for the laptop I did so dont expect yours to be exactly the same as it may well not be....
Hmmmm, maybe that bit should be at the top eh lol...
