I must say, I'm growing increasingly concerned about my external 300gb Maxtor OneTouch drive. I've got over 220gb of data on it, and its making some very unhealthy noises as of late

I hear Maxtor just say "we'll replace, if you want recovery, go to one of our 'approved' companies or we'll void your warranty". And these recovery specialists charge upwards of 300 quid. Stick with Seagate

Three words: Stop pimping Seagate. Seagate are really not that great. I've already had to replace two faulty 300GB Seagates (With NO data recovery option, so I don't know where you come with that as being a factor, Xaneden), and now one of the replacements is also making dodgy noises. Not to mention, option 2 in the poll completely owns the 300GB Seagate equivalent in every category, according to a comparison review I read before buying mine (Which I am entirely happy with). Google around a bit for that review.

On the other hand, since you say reliability is critical, poll option 3 might be best. I wouldn't go with WD in that regard.

I've always gone with Seagate or WD. Last month I got a Samsung spinpoint 250gb sats II drive and I can hardly hear it.

I'm sure I read somewhere some people have problems with the Maxtor Maxline III and certain boards. Something to do with the pin layout on the sata cables.
