    SATA Card

I am ready to build a NAS server at home using some left over kit. Its an old 800Mhz PIII with 640Mb Ram. Going to run Debian Linux (my preferred distro).

Need an SATA card (pref SATA II) to run a JBOD array (no raid for me - can't see it giving me using the extra ooomph) - prefer 4 port if poss but will live with 2 port for now.. Problem is the motherboard is old and not compliant to PCI 2.something (Had a problem with it and a Linksys 54G wireless card due to this fact). Gonna start with a couple of 300Gb drives and go from there.

    Any recommendations?

    PATA hard discs?

Serously, don't throw good money at something that is obsolite. If I where you I would either stick with Parallel ATA discs, or start from a clean sheet. I don't think it is worth buying specialised hardware just to keep an obsolite motherboard limping along.

If you do go for the clean sheet option, then one approach would be to go to Dell, and buy the cheapest system they have, that way you get reliable hardware without any faf, and plenty of room for all those extra discs.
