    Wink Spec me a PC

Right, my mate wants me to build a new computer for him and it's going to be for gaming & video/photo editing. His maximum budget is £1500 for the case and everything inside lol. He has the Dell 24" monitor so the graphics card should not be too shabby, he currently uses a 6800 ultra.

So what case, mobo, cpu, ram, gpu etc should be bought for this new system?

The 6800 Ultra is a pretty decent card so I imagine the rest of his PC is pretty good too. Any chance you can give us the rest of the current system spec so we know what we have to beat?

If hes gunna overclock it would be better to get 2x1gb rather than 4x512

I'm sure I read somewhere that 4x512 often performed betetr than 2x1gb in unclocked situations and in most games.

Yes that may be true, but its harder to overclock 4 modules that 2. Or thats what people have told me in relation to me using 3 rather than 2 Also harder to get it to run at 1t rather than 2t (less latency problems)

While this is partly true, 2 x 1gb models are starting to come in with very low latencies, nearly as low as the 512mb modules, so there's not really too much difference.

Just done a similar thing for a mate of mine so had this basket from scan saved , reckon this set up would do that monitor justice ,

I just chose all these parts from Scan to compare it with others:

Chenbro *Scan Exclusive* Gaming Bomb 2 - Silver / Aluminium Ultra Hi End

    600w Seasonic S12-600 SLi Ready Silent PSU 2xPCI-E 4xSATA 120mm Fan ATX1.3/2.01

    Asus A8N-SLi Premium NF4 S939 DDR400 PCI-E SATA Raid Gbit Lan 8Ch Audio

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+

    2 Gb (2 x 1 Gb) Corsair TwinX, DDR, PC3200PT, Cas 3

    256Mb XFX PCI-E GF7800GTX DDR3 Dual DVI ViVo TV (G70) *Pre Overclocked*

    250GB Samsung SpinPoint P120S (SP2504C) 7200rpm, 8MB, SATA II Fluid Dynamic Bearings, 25dBA

Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound Card

    NEC ND-4550A

    Total price: £1,478.21 (+ V.A.T % Carriage)

If I shop around I can probably save him around £100, but the case will be bought from Scan since he seems to really like it after seeing mine lol.

If he isn't dead set on getting that case then I would have to suggest going for

    LN10970 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ S939 1MB £304.44 £357.72
    LN11005 580W HiperPower Type-R Modular Black PSU £53.98 £63.43

    LN8282 Akasa Eclipse-62 Midi Tower Case £72.89 £85.65
    LN8599 2X 120mm Coolermaster Fan with BLUE LED £3.69 £8.67
    LN11461 250GB SATA300 Samsung SpinPoint P120S £67.33 £79.11

And getting the memory from Here for the G.Skill 2GB ZX Series kit with latencies of 2-3-2-5, at 249 Euro's which works out at about £170 and can be overclocked a bit if thats your mates thing.

Its works out £5 over budget in total but with free delivery, if you get it all from Scan, it comes in at a few pounds under.

Thats one hell of a system. Ok the case isn't the Chenbro but its a pretty good case as its the one I am using at the moment or could be even cheaper if you were to go with something like the Aurora like some people have suggested or the Silverstone Temjin TJ04 which is black or the TJ02 which is silver if I remember correctly, all these cases come with pretty good reviews.

Is the 512MB 7800GTX really worth it?
