ATA Controller Cards
As I got a dual mobo off ebuyer, the board only supports DMA-66. So I thought, hmm get a controller card. So I did, I got an Ultra ATA-133 card. So my Maxtor should be making the most of it. However wouldn't the throughput be less than if it was on the IDE channel of a ATA-133 capable motherboard, because it has to go through the PCI bus instead?
Just wondered. It does seem a bit quicker though than when I had it on the mobo! :)

Not always, because remember the PCI bus has a theoretical limit of 133MBps, and also, the IDE bus is part of the PCI bus anyway, so they are pretty much the same thing (IDE is off the PCI, the Card is off the PCI).

;) Depends on the HD in question and whether you run alot of stuff on the PCI bus. IDE transfers don't use the PCI bus' bandwidth whereas a PCI controller card will. ATA100 is certainly enough for any modern IDE HD, ATA66 may limit things a little and will surely use more CPU for data transfers. I guess you'd have to benchmark (speed, CPU usage) and see frmt here, still may not illustrate real world though as gaming or playing MP3's may use up more of the PCI bus? I doubt the diffs will be even remotely significant either way.
