Dual Core CPU fight @ Cnet

Cnet decided to pitch both AMD and Intel Dual cores in a fight to see which would be the best for todays users.

    They put the systems through the following tests and the results are quite amazing ;

Day-to-day computing, Gaming, Multitasking, Photo editing, MP3 encoding, Video
    encoding, Price vs. performance

    I wonder how that top-dollar P4 sells.

I can't see it being in an off-the-shelf PC, only custom build PCs would have those kind of chips in them. And if they're only used in custom PCs, then surely the average DIYer will read up the reviews and see the difference.

So with that in mind, are Intel actually selling any?

I guess things may change if you start overclocking, but at stock speeds, why would you chose the Intel EE 840 ?

Havn't read the article yet, but I'm betting it turns out to give the same results as every other one, AMD pwns the Intel in almost every non-synthetic and synthetic test that exists, costs half the price, puts out half the heat and doesn't need a small power station to run it.

But why oh why do a lot of bigtime system builders still use Intel prettymuch exclusively? Bonkers.

Cuz of that little blue man advert - for the average user who wants a bit of internet, games, office marketing sells CPU's and CPU's sell machines.

I reckon the average man on the street knows what an Intel Pentium is. Intel have a very strong brand and a well known product set in 'Pentium' in a retail environment.

AMD on the other hand are known to us and others but as a brand they are an industry brand name only.

    People ask for Pentiums.

Intel might be in a world of hurt now, everyone knows the p4 is a dead donkey as opposed to the mighty stallion it was back in the northwood time, even intel know this. This is just a stopgap, and as such it sucks hard.

Wait for their real Dual core efforts in Yonah and more specifically Conroe next year. I can sense a slightly closer battle, and that only means the consumer wins

    Sad truth that is^

AMD are the best at the moment. Maybe that will change with the next gen of intel processors?? But again from what I've heard: no on-die memory controller will set them back again.

AMD need to get their brand name out there more

Indeed, ask 10 of the postdocs in my department.. 9 of them will say ask u to get a Pentium for them. Get them an Athlon or Opteron, they'll give you a sour grin and never talk to you until they manage to break that AMD to pieces.

Well, there are some loyal fanboys that are so sored over Intel that even with performance charts etc showing that AMD is better.. they'll just throw 'Well.. Intel is more reliable, and I like it' at you.

I managed to convince my professor to get a dual opteron into our lab, and believe me even when the opteron does things much faster than our crusty old dual Xeons, they're still saying that I should have gotten a new Xeon workstation.

Thats how solid the Intel brand is with people nowadays. Well, for Intel's merits.. their chips are still workable, abeit a little slow.
