    In a jam!

I am still here doing some research, even got an excel sheet running (parts, features, SKU, prices etc). I am still unsure whether or not to move to Skt 939.

Essentially, I am getting an XFX card but want to know, and would appreciate any advice:

Is it worth spending extra £90 to get from 450 to 475 Mhz and 1.05 to 1.25 Ghz? Whats the bottom line on this?

On the same two cards is a jump from 20 to 24 pipelines - What does that mean to me- Bottom line?

Will my AMD 64 Newcastle 3000+ running at 2.0Ghz let me down on higher end games? If the CPU is a little old for new games then that may signal a move to Skt 939.

I am going to move RAM from 1gb to 2Gb. I suppose its the difference between an upgrade and a new PC for me.

I have even considered getting the xfx 512

    Appreciate your opinions.

Are you talking about getting a 7800GT or GTX? Both are great cards but and will run almost every game with everything maxed out. What resolution will you be running at? Your CPU is getting a little long in the tooth and will be the bottleneck but it wont be a major one. Do you have a 754 PCI-E motherboard?

    Thanks for the reply mate.

    I am considering:
    XFX PVT70G-UDF7 GT Extreme 256 (450Mhz/ 1.05Ghz) Scan: LN 11466
    XFX PVT70F- UDE7 GTX Gamers Edition 256 (475Mhz/ 1.25Ghz) Scan LN 12418

I have considerd the 512 but the price puts me off and justifying that to Mrs Black will be difficult. Would be nice tho.

I need a new PCI-E, skt 754 board to use my current CPU and if my current CPU isn't going to cause too many issues then I will stick with 754 (+ it keeps costs down). Narrowed it down to three:

    Foxconn NF4K8AB-8EKRS non SLI (3 DIMMS); £53
    Epox EP-8NPA SLI (2 Dimms); £73
    Epox EP-8NPAJ non SLI (3 DIMMS). £46

My concern is that if the CPU is a bottleneck I am stuck with trying to get a nice 754 CPU upgrade, or the alternative is to fork out the cash and move to skt 939 which appears to be better supported by board manufacturers (at the moment). I will spend more cash but in the long run is it worth it? I don't know.

So - all in all which skt and is it worth the extra 90 for a 256 GTX?

I would go for the 7800 GTX and the cheapest of the three mobos as a stop gap I would think any one of those would run your CPU at 2Ghz. If you feel your CPU needs uprgaded then I would suggest either going 939 or hanging of untill next year when M2 will be out and miss out 939 all together . Then sell off your CPU and Mobo to keep the mrs happy. I would say the extra £90 is worth the cash as the graphics card should last you a fair while.

i would also say get the cheapest motherboard for now, stick with s754 (as a 3000 NC is no slouch) and do a CPU upgrade when either yonah or Socket M2 come out and get the inital bugs solved.

As I said above haven't got a PCI-E so buying one. Apparently there will be no AGP 7800, not ever.

Sgoaty and Cougho - thanks for posting replies - going to order the XFX GTX as mentioned. Ebuyer have to confirm stock though. Only one other card caught my eye and that didn't seem to available much it was a Leadtek 7800 GTX TDH Extreme 256 (490Mhz/ 1.25Ghz 40Gb sec/ 24 pipes). Micro Direct had it at 371 - good review on Hexus.

EPoX EP-8NPAJ and gonna call crucila in morning about a 2meg kit they do to see if compat.

Last question do you reckon I should up me PSU (current is 420w Superflower, 2 fan 3 speed)

    Cheers -

id say replace the PSU yep, not because its underpowered but ive heard of superflowers going boom alot....... which when you have a 7800GTX, is not good.

And if your on a budget id look at the XClio PSU's on scan, £48 for what is basically an Antec Truepower 2.

Cheers mate - a fellow scouser comes through.

Will take a look at the PSU you quote.

    So far:

XFX GTX from Ebuyer (lovely price 19 quid below Scan)
EPox MOBO ( EP-8NPAJ) (46 quid Komplett and in stock)
    Memory x2 1024 from Crucial (CT2KIT12864Z40B)
PSU - Ebuyer or Komplett depending if stocked if not will look at Scan.

Suggested to wife a new 19 inch monitor might be required - not too hostile a reaction - give me a couple of months

    Cheers
