How much would he be willing to spend? Does he want to overclock the 3200+?

Even if they do want to overclock the venice, there is no need to run the RAM faster too. Use the RAM dividers but shoot for max CPU speed, that is where all the gains are to be had with an A64.

Scan have 1GB sticks for £52 on today only http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/

Or from Crucial http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/list...asp?family=DDR £108 for a pair of 512MB.

i know you can use the dividers but isnt it still preferable for 1 to 1 like my trusty old steam powered xp?

if the dividers dont give much of a loss then nightshadows suggestion could be a winner

i wouldnt recommend a single stick as you dont get the dual channel benefits

No, A64 performance isn't restricted by memory bandwidth only CPU speed. The architecture is completely different to Athlon XP's.

Dual Channel is totaly over-rated. Forget about it, and tell everyone you know to forget about it too so I don't have to, as its absoltely crazy how many Athlon users thing Dual Channel is helpfull, at best you'll get a 4% difference with dual channel, its nothing, barely there.

If you just want basic RAM and no dual channel - 1GB Scan's finest. ~ £55.21

    If you want dual channel basic RAM - 2 x 512MB Scan's finest. ~ 2 x £25.72 = £51.44

If you don't want dual channel or tight timings but like a lil extra speed (CAS2.5) - 1GB Corsair VS. **Currently out of stock** ~ £64.61

If you don't care for timings but want dual channel and a lil extra speed - 2 x 512MB Corsair VS. ~ £60.97

If you want all the fancies including tight timings - 2 x 512MB Corsair TwinX. ~ £84.59

The C2PT stuff Nightshadow mentioned earlier really depends on which rev u actually get. C2PT are usually runover stocks which can be from anywhere, If u get soemthing like rev 4.6 then you are getting TCCC or TCCD. Cant recall who told me this. but I think I've asked that very same question before.

In terms of performance the following is probably the right order:

    1. Amount - more than 1Gb is wasted in some cases, but more and more this will become the necessary, and when it is having faster memory does nothing.
    2. Speed (i.e. PC4000>PC3200).
    3. Running at 1T (although this can make up for a fair bit of speed difference).
    4. Dual Channel (although synthetic benchmarks probably would probably have this at the top).
    5. Timings.

Regarding dual channel - this is basically free, so why wouldn't you have it?

There's lots of reasonable RAM makes: Corsair, Crucial, GSkill, Geil, Mushkin, OCZ, Patriot. These guys sell most of it: http://www.pc-memory-upgrade.co.uk/

get some mushkin L2V2 - or, alternatively check out PCMU.CO.UK - i got my mushkin tccd from there! absolutely amazing stuff, i didnt pay stupid money, has worked in my intel system (don't ask - brief flirtation!) upto 280 at 2.5-2-3-5 - as soon as my opteron arrives, hope to get it at 300 at 2.5-3-3-5

Ram overclocking is over rated with Athlon 64's.

It is far more important to go for high cpu mhz than ram 1:1.

If he really wants to spend the money then tell him to get 2gb of value ram otherwise I'd get 1gb of value ram and use the spare £50 to get a better graphics card. £50 on the graphics will give a far more noticable speed increase.
