    FX to go dual core.

Well, i'm pretty interested in all this - I'm planning on upgrading my gfx card and cpu fairly soon (read xmas and/or early '06) and an FX60 has been rumoured for early next year. (most of these links have now gone, but some remain on google...)

Why isn't it a FX59? Every FX series chip has been odd numbered. Well, again speculation, but I (and others) are thinking/hoping its going to be a dual core chip...

Now something that doesn't relate to the FX-60, but the FX-62. AMD's roadmap is showing this as:

    Athlon 64 FX-62 Windsor M2 Q2'06

Windsor being the dual channel core. There is no FX listed for the orleans (single core) series..

    Read ithe road map here:

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=2587

So... new FX will be dual core? Follows the new naming convention for dual core FX's quite well...

Dual Core FX? Whoa now that will be brute raw power, and has the power to swallow my debit card in one :O I hope there is one just for speed sakes, although I'm really unlikely to get one

I thought that the FX names were changing to line up with Opteron names i.e. FX-60, then FX-65. Can't remember where I read that though.

I heard that too. One thing that would be scary with a dual core FX chip would be the price, at the moment most x2 cpus are at leas twice the price of one of their cores, imagine if they used the same pricing strategy it would be in the region of £1000

I think Intel's dual core CPU's were around £900 when they first came out. Crazy money but the sheer power is immense.

Problem is FX series is meant for games - how many games are gonna support dual core in the next 6 months?

True - but games might support dual core within the lifetime of the CPU i.e. one or two years.

I see your point - but I'm sure some people will keep an FX for a while, especially those that might be getting it prebuilt.

Yep i've read that too, but the name FX62 isn't inline with current opteron names either :/ You can also buy an opteron 180, so would a fx65 (if the naming was inline) be slower? or would they jump straight to FX90?

Very very nice. Think about some of the things that seperate PC games out from the console market: multiplayer and toolset/editor tools to create extra content.

Being able to run a server at the same time as a client is a nice thing, and when you're developing being able to test without shutting down the editor is a real time saver too.
