"Safely Remove Hardware" option and SATA drives.

I got my first SATA drive today. I have notice the "Safely Remove Hardware" option in the system tray like you get with USB drives etc is there. Is this normal? Does it need to be there/any way of removing it? What would happen if my windows install was on that drive and i 'safely' removed it? Or do i just learn to ignore it?

You can't remove the sytem drive as it won't let you.

Did you load the nVidia SW IDE or SATA drivers?
If you just stick with the MS drivers you won't get the "safely remove" icon.

You sure? I did not install any drivers, so i'm using the MS ones.

Would i benfit greatly if i installed the nVidia ones?

    What HDD did you get?
There has been some discussion on Abit-USA as to whether some HDs show up with that icon even without nVidia drivers. I know that mine don't but the second that I install nVidia drivers - bingo! it appears for them.

I usually recommend not to install unless running RAID where you have to load drivers.

    It's a Samsung Spinpoint P120 250GB.

I have looked at the nForce drivers i got from abit with my motherboard and the nForce driver package i got from nVidea's site a while back. They don't seem to contain any SATA drivers, just SMbus, Ethernet, IDE and audio. Or am i missing someting?

nF4 has native support for single SATA drives & it basically sees it as an IDE drive.

Am I right in saying that at no point have you installed the SW IDE drivers?
If so it's looking as if SATA 3.0Gb/s drives may be showing up with the "safely remove" icon natively.

It's the same for me, using an old Seagate 200GB SATA I drive before and after installing the nVidia SATA drivers for the Abit board...

They're hot swappable, so you can "eject" one and swap in another if you want. Unless it's the system drive of course.

I have this problem with A maxtor diamondmax 10 160gb as my main drive and Asus a8n board. Have not been able to find any way to fix it. Just keep all young kids away and it should be fine.

Its not a problem. Its the way SATA drives are designed.
You can hotswap them like a USB pen drive. Just not the system drive.
