another 'what memory' thread.

First, thanks for all the useful advice I've already hunted for on the forum. I'm stuck on suitable memory for my new about to be built PC though.

I've used the memory recommender's on Corsair and Crucial, but they seem to come up with the most expensive memory, or a long list. I am confused over how much to get and what type.

I have an Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe, AMD 3700+ , and a 6600GT graphics card. (+dvd writer, case, hdd etc).
- not planning to do much in the way of modding unless it requires very little effort.
- not planning to play many high-end games (got my eye on a new games machine).
- I do a lot of photo editing 6mp images (I go for cups of tea when I start up Photoshop)
- the usual net/office type work, bit of flash, bit of dreamweaver
- planning to do some digital video work using something like Ulead VideoStudio9

Should I get 512, 1gb, 2gb? more? and what range - unbranded, value, flashing lights?

I'm don't want to under-specify but also I don't want to waste cash

Well what sort of budget are you looking at.

Try and get as much as you can afford, 2GB can be had for as little as that much and is well worth it to be honest.

Geil Value packs are great value for the type of work your doing. A gig is only about £55 and it has heatspreaders. I use this for photoshop and illustrater on an Asus mobo with no probs. Not sure what its overclocking potential is that shouldn't be a problem unless you want to play lots of games.

more RAM's always useful, especially when dealing with photo/video editting. I'd recommend (if your budget allows it) to pick up a 2GB Corsair Value Select Kit for ~£123, If the gaming aint 2 important to ya, then you wont really need low latency stuff.

Oh, looks like 2gb then :D Budget wise, I don't mind spending if it's going to give me worthwhile value. I think I'd rather buy higher gb of 'value' memory than less of a performance type, but I'm open to suggestions. The recommendations so far seem fine and are about what I expected to pay , errr. ok a bit more maybe, I was thinking 1gb at around £80, but I can manage £120-£140 for 2gb

Get 2Gb. Branded Value is a bit more than no name, but the warranty makes it worth spending that bit extra.

Going for the 2GB Corsair Value Select Kit VS2GBKIT400C3 (2x1Gb DDR400/PC3200 2x128Mx64, non-ECC 2x184 DIMM Unbuffered CL3) @ £123.32 from Scan, as I'm buying most of the other components from them :) (fingers crossed they may even do a Today Only offer) I was a little concerned that it doesn't show up on compatibility lists, but assume it's because it's fairly new?

Compatability lists are generally useless, they are so far out of date. The memory manufacturers often have a better tool.

Doesn't come up on the Corsair site, which is a bit worrying, but the forum there does seem to indicate it's a match.

All Corsair memory is on Scan's today only but not the 2x1gb as it's out of stock :(
