    CDROMS and HARDDRIVES

ok, i have a cd burner, cdrom and 1 hard drive....

should i make my harddrive the master on the primary IDE channel and then hook the cdrom and cdr up on the secondary channel together...

I heard that for cd recording, its not good to have your two cdroms on the same ide channel. i was told that i should have my harddrive and one of my cdroms on the primary ide channel and then have the remaining cdrom on the secondary channel as the master...

does anyone any experience with this.

If your burner already has some sort of buffer under-run protection, then having the CD-ROM and itself on the same IDE channel should pose no problems.

Depends what you want to do, basically, an IDE Cable can only do so much, if you want to burn a cd from a cd, then dont put them on the same cable, if you want to burn from a hdd, dont put them on the same cable - they will work, but very slowly, of course you may do both, in which case put them how you feel they will be used most.

Think of it like a pipe, cant go up and down quickly can it

put the cdrom drives on a second channel and have the hd on the primary channel... i'm pretty sure that having a cdrom on the same cable as a hd decreases performance (someone can either back me up on this or tell me i'm wrong )... you could always experiment..

Put simply you want to avoid putting devices on the same channel that are likely to be used simultaneously. Since copy on-the-fly (CDROM to CDRW) is pointless (since around 8x) it makes sense to put HD as Primary Master and the CDRW as Secondary Master. If you can find a reason to keep the CDROM drive then putting it as a Slave to the device least likely to be used simultaeously is best. Putting a CD drive on as Slave to a HD shouldn't have any significant effect even when used simultaneously, it's just that HDs tend to use up the channel's bandwidth more so it can make more sense to give it it's own channel (ie no slave) whenever possible. The only thing you really want to avoid is putting 2 HDs on the same channel esp if they are likely to be used simultaneously. At the end of the day I doubt it makes much real diff, but technically it is best.
